Course program
Summary of basic soil mechanics concepts (5 hours). Foundations: general, functional and typological features (6 hours). Analysis and design of shallow foundations: generalised collapse mechanism and its extension to include eccentricity, inclined loads (20 hours); punching collapse mechanism (3 hours). Settlements analyses; criteria for settlements admittance (10 hours). Use of codes of practice (9 hours). Analysis and design of deep foundations: limit axial load for a single pile (5 hours). (Time schedule is approximate based on based on experience from previous years)
Prerequisites
Soil Mechanics. Site and laboratory geotechnical characterisation.

Teaching mode
The teaching activity includes theoretical lessons and applied tutorials. As indicated above, the course will be delivered adopting the traditional in-presence approach.
Frequency
The course, due to its interactive nature, necessarily requires classroom attendance.
Exam mode
Oral exam on the topics discussed in the course. In detail, it consists of solving an exercise proposed by the lecturer and answering one or two questions on the topics covered by the course programme. The final assessment will be conventionally expressed in thirtieths.
