Storytelling

The purpose of the Degree Course is to train construction specialists who are aware of the economic, social and environmental implications of changes made to theterritory which define the basis of a sustainable construction concept, in various climate and environmental contexts.

A specialist is one who is aware of the role played by building activities within the framework of protecting and enhancing the environmental characteristics of the territory, one who is concerned about the need for a sustainable approach when implementing changes.  A technician is one who starts from a profound knowledge of the qualities of the territory and its social, financial and environmentalcharacteristics, who focuses first of all on the stock of existing buildings and then applies techniques and materials with reduced environmental impact when making changes.

In addition to basic core subjects and subjects of building engineering, which are integrated with the traditional civil engineering courses, the Degree focuses on environmental sustainability, which is addressed through the courses of the Environmental Engineering Degree, which contributes to the training of building technicians who are aware of the sustainable dimension of the environmental changes it creates.

In this context the main educational objective of this degree course is to provide students with the skills required for analysing, recognizing, understanding and intervening whilst maintaining awareness of the complex interrelation which exists amongst the many activities of management, design, development, and production and the different operational layers that are at the core of the building industry, meaning the various activities of the transformation of a territory in its physical, morphological, economic, and social aspects, paying particular attention to the impact and the sustainability of the planned technical operations.

In order to train professionals who are capable of acting)consciously and correctly within  the current complex landscape of buildingand territory modification with a sustainable approach, in various climate and environmental contexts, and therefor in relation to scenarios, which are also international, the degree program also provides students with the scientific knowledge needed to obtain an appropriate technical and operational training in the fields of Architectural and Environmental Engineering, whose major target is the organization, protection and modification for settlement purposes  of the environment and surrounding spaces in which mankind resides.

In this sense, the Degree in Sustainable Building Engineering caters for a   precise and widespread cultural, social and economic need of an important industry. An industry which requires cutting edge knowledge in science and technology, and the ability to provide appropriate design and management solutions for the many and evident technical interventions in the territory and the environment.

The Degree Course, divided into semesters, is organised so that the different skills and abilities are attained progressively, increasing in complexity over time.

The objective of the first year program will be the acquisition of basic knowledge and application techniques for scientific-technological training aimed at understanding the built environment and the intervention practices to be made on it.

The second year will cover on the one hand the implementation of core subjects as well as operative technologies in the building field, and on the other hand the basics of engineering subjects.

The last year of the programme will be dedicated to training in sectors specific to Engineering for Sustainable Building, with special attention to the educational fields which apply during interventions both on built and natural environments.
In order to provide the engineer in Sustainable Building with a practical experience of the integration of the multiple applications in which his/her skills can be applied, the career path also includes laboratory activities, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, and the possibility of traineeshipsopportunities.
