ROMAN PROVINCES both Eastern and Western ones. These knowledge and skills integrate and/or consolidate those acquired in the first cycle of studies in the field of classical archaeology,
critically deepening the theoretical and methodological foundations necessary for the study of the archaeology of the Roman Empire.
The aim of the course is to provide the student with the tools to analyze the intercultural dynamics between the different areas of the Roman Empire and the ways in which Rome
encountered/confronted the provincial territories and their pre-existing cultural traditions. The intent is to guarantee the understanding and assimilation of the general lines of development of the multifaceted processes of acculturation which characterized urban planning and architecture in the Roman provinces, from East to West, and which gave rise to original and unique expressions in different contexts.
At the end of the course, the student will master methods, tools and analytical skills useful for defining the historical and cultural contextualization of the themes related to the complex and varied world of Roman provincial art.

critically deepening the theoretical and methodological foundations necessary for the study of the archaeology of the Roman Empire.
The aim of the course is to provide the student with the methodological approaches for studying the complex processes of cultural interaction and assimilation-resistance between Rome and the
provinces, as well as the post-colonial debates which have led to the formation of the complex and articulated manifestations of archaeology in the Roman provincial world, focusing on the main historical dynamics, on the macro-phenomena of economy and trade, as well as on the cultural and religious aspects of both Western and Eastern provinces. The student will be able to acquire in-depth knowledge of the multifaceted monumental and artistic heritage in the various geographical areas and in wide-ranging chronological view that formed the Roman Empire interpreted within the background of the interaction between the centre and the periphery, within and beyond the Roman frontiers.
The student will therefore be able to develop skills of analysis and critical re-elaboration, formulating assumptions in a more complex and articulated form, communicating the knowledge
and processes that led to their acquisition and elaborating interdisciplinary research paths.

The purpose is to provide critical tools in order to examine in- depth the main historical subjects of the classical archaeology as well as the more recent research trends.

Educational objectives

The course will deal with the issues related to the archeology of production, trade and consumption, retracing the journey made by the main classes of artefacts studied from archaeologists from the moment of their making to that of final burial. After a brief introduction on the history of material culture, the production cycles of these materials (ceramics, glass, metal, stone, wood, fabrics, etc.) will be analyzed, retracing the individual chaînes operatoires. The systems used for the distribution of goods from the production to the consumption centers will then be considered, examining the terrestrial and maritime/fluvial routes, and the places connected to the storage and disposal of goods. Finally, the economic life of a sample center will be investigated as a case study. Taking advantage of the skills acquired in the first part of the course, the main stages of the economic life of this city will be studied, evaluating how – over time – local productions and imports have met the needs of its inhabitants. Particular attention will be paid to the sources, tools and methods used by archaeologists, historians, epigraphists, philologists, anthropologists, ethnologists in the reconstruction of the economy taken into account.

Advanced learning of the systems of classification and philological analysis of pluristratified contexts of the Classical World; quantitative and qualitative analyses; advanced knowledge of procedures to be applied in the reconstruction of the cultural phenomenon on the basis of the relation between archaeological evidence and other kinds of historical sources.

Educational objectives

This course will provide the students with an understanding of the main stages in the history of the
animal domestication, from the Palaeolithic to modern times. The importance of domestic animals
in the history of human societies as well as its variation in time and space will be discussed. The
unit will cover ecological and economic as well as social aspects and will illustrate the role played
by domestic animals in human communities and the historical and archaeological documentation of
the early stages up to the formation of modern breeds.

The course analyzes the forms, developments and organization of war in the Assyrian world, from the 9th to the 7th century BC, through the analysis of written documents (in translation) and wall panel reliefs. In particular, the course focuses on the following aspects: 1) the formation and composition of armies; 2) the military campaigns; 3) the forms of battle; 4) the narration of the war; 5) costs, impact and management of armies.

The course aims to addressing the knowledge of the settlement patterns and socio-political structures of Magna Graecia through the examination of all the available sources of information and with reference to the main topics concerning the current scientific debate. The territorial patterns, settlement organizations and socio-cultural processes that that arose in the different areas of southern Italy from the 8 th century BC onwards will be considered, also through the examination of specific case studies. In particular, the issues related with the very first phases of the colonial phenomenon in Southern Italy as well as urban and territorial organisation of the cities and the cultural manifestations that can be defined through the examination of the archaeological dossier and the ancient literary sources will be examined.

The study of ancient architecture through the interpretation of its remains: survey for the critical
reading of the remains, topographic contextualization, 3d modeling, virtual reconstruction. Direct
and indirect survey activities aimed at the correct deciphering of the remains: the reconstructive
modeling of the architectural buildings. Survey exercises of architectural remains are planned in an
archaeological context to be defined.

proposes to provide, in the context of ARCHEZOOLOGY, knowledge and skills of
understandings that complement and / or reinforce those acquired in the first cycle of studies, and of
to enable the student to tackle original themes also in a research context,
formulating judgments in a more complex and articulated form, communicating knowledge and i
processes that led to their acquisition, and studying the topics in such a way
autonomous.
The purpose of the theoretical-practical course is to provide skills not only for the
anatomical and species determination but also for the interpretation of the data from the point of
view of the exploitation of the faunal resource providing an adequate spectrum of
knowledge in the context of the study and reconstruction of the human-animal relationship in
past. Case studies will be presented, which take into consideration different
survey methods, relating to contexts of different chronological periods in Italy to the area

The aim of this course is to provide students, through significant cases of Provincial Archaeology, advanced knowledge of the Roman Provincial culture, of relationship between centre and periphery, as well as a framework of the main historical, cultural and religious dynamics regarding the Western and Eastern Provinces. The course will focus on specific topics regarding the Roman Empire, on the urban and domestic Culture, as well as on the Sacred and Funerary space.

The course will deal with the issues related to the archeology of production, trade and consumption, retracing the journey made by the main classes of artefacts studied from archaeologists from the moment of their making to that of final burial. After a brief introduction on the history of material culture, the production cycles of these materials (ceramics, glass, metal, stone, wood, fabrics, etc.) will be analyzed, retracing the individual chaînes operatoires. The systems used for the distribution of goods from the production to the consumption centers will then be considered, examining the terrestrial and maritime/fluvial routes, and the places connected to the storage and disposal of goods. Finally, the economic life of a sample center will be investigated as a case study. Taking advantage of the skills acquired in the first part of the course, the main stages of the economic life of this city will be studied, evaluating how – over time – local productions and imports have met the needs of its inhabitants. Particular attention will be paid to the sources, tools and methods used by archaeologists, historians, epigraphists, philologists, anthropologists, ethnologists in the reconstruction of the economy taken into account.

The course will deal with the issues related to the archeology of production, trade and consumption, retracing the journey made by the main classes of artefacts studied from archaeologists from the moment of their making to that of final burial. After a brief introduction on the history of material culture, the production cycles of these materials (ceramics, glass, metal, stone, wood, fabrics, etc.) will be analyzed, retracing the individual chaînes operatoires. The course assumes as astarting point that archaeological research needs method, and method is rooted in theory and converted into practice. Students will be stimulated to assume and coordinate these three fundamental facets of the archaeological work. The treated arguments span from landscape to excavation, from typology to iconography, from material culture to written sources and epigraphy, from genetics to social studies, from political to sociological evaluation. The course will deal with the issues related to the archeology of production, trade and consumption, retracing the journey made by the main classes of artefacts studied from archaeologists from the moment of their making to that of final burial. After a brief introduction on the history of material culture, the production cycles of these materials (ceramics, glass, metal, stone, wood, fabrics, etc.) will be analyzed, retracing the individual chaînes operatoires. The systems used for the distribution of goods from the production to the consumption centers will then be considered, examining the terrestrial and maritime/fluvial routes, and the places connected to the storage and disposal of goods. Finally, the economic life of a sample center will be investigated as a case study. Taking advantage of the skills acquired in the first part of the course, the main stages of the economic life of this city will be studied, evaluating how – over time – local productions and imports have met the needs of its inhabitants. The purpose of the course is an approach to the understanding of Islamic material culture and artistic expression of the first centuries of Islam, by means of archaeological evidences and sources: from the Roman-Byzantine castrum to the Islamic palace, from the Byzantine thermae to the Islamic baths, from the Sasanian audience hall to the Islamic audience hall; the typical buildings: the mosque, the madrasa, the caravanserai, the suq/bazaar. The aims of the caliphate will be extensively studied, from town planning to the so-called iconoclasm (and its relations with Byzantine and Hebrew iconoclasm), to the achievement of the emancipation processes from the Byzantine and the Persian civilizations (starting from the coinage).

The course aims to deepen the issues related to the development of the Bronze Age and Iron Age societies in the Mediterranean area, particularly with reference to the transition from village communities to the formation of the first forms of proto-urban organization. The course is organized with lectures and seminars and is aimed at those students who wish to learn more about aspects of protohistory in the central and western Mediterranean area.

Analysis of the regional diversities (cultural, social, environmental, and economic) that brought to the early urban and state societies. The regions involved are: Anatolia, Mesopotamia, Levant, Egypt, and Iran.

In particular, the course aims to provide in a multi and interdisciplinary perspective an overview of the issues related to the “deep history” of North Africa.

The aim of the course is to analyze the Etruscan civilization from the early Iron Age to the Hellenistic period, with particular regard to the relationship between the city and the territory, the funerary ideology, and the manifestations of the "sacer".

The aim of this course is to provide students, through significant cases of Provincial Archaeology, advanced knowledge of the Roman Provincial culture, of relationship between centre and periphery, as well as a framework of the main historical, cultural and religious dynamics regarding the Western and Eastern Provinces. The course will focus on specific topics regarding the Roman Empire, on the urban and domestic Culture, as well as on the Sacred and Funerary space.

The course aims to recognise methodology of medieval architecture, in own economic and social contest. Features of site, structural choices, technical expertise, purchasing activities are analyzed. Students will learn the archaeological view to undestanding architecture stiles from Late Antiquity to Middle Ages, their location in urban topography and in the settlement, their function. Will be analyzed architectural complex.
