Correct and clear response to the 4 questions posed by the client. Selection of reference architectures in scale with the dimensions and functional needs of the East Side Gallery. Do not crowd the area with buildings, we need just pavillons and keep going like this.
NEUTUER 27
You’ve got the point but we must not lose the identity oft he East Side Gallery area as the "largest open-air museum in the world". We need small buildings, pavilions rather than real huge buildings.
BEYOND WALLS 25
We asked to have an idea of your design intentions about 4 questions foundamental for our competition client by means of references to existing contemporary buildings. You sent us also some previews of your final solutions. Your art of designing seems to be not so updated if you compare with the architecture of the present. Reflect more and consider the scale of the buildings we need for the "largest open-air museum in the world", as the East Side Gallery has been already known and needs to remain . Smaller buildings, pavilions rather than real huge buildings.
3RE 25
We asked to have an idea of your design intentions about 4 questions foundamental for our competition client by means of references to existing contemporary buildings. You sent us also some previews of your final solutions. Your art of designing seems to be not so coherent if you compare with the architecture of the present you propose as a model. Reflect more and anyway consider the scale of the buildings we need for the "largest open-air museum in the world", as the East Side Gallery has been already known and needs to remain . Smaller buildings, pavilions rather than huge buildings.
BERLIN BLEND
24
We asked to have an idea of your design intentions about 4 questions foundamental for our client by means of references to existing contemporary buildings. We don’t find any reference to the questions. Just references in order o illustrate your project solutions. The client was very disappointed. Anyway mind the scale of the needed architectures for the East Side Gallery. Sure that you can compare the reference of a bridge on the River Nile with a small river as the Spree River in Berlin?
BERLINK 25
We asked to have an idea of your design intentions about 4 questions foundamental for our client by means of references to existing contemporary buildings. You added a not requested repetition of your project confusing the client. Mind the scale of the needed architectures for the East Side Gallery, today still defined „the largest open air museum oft he world . Small buildings, pavilions rather than real buildings. The only of your references matching this goal is the Coffee production plant in Georgia. Reflect on the whole project and conclude.
DIALOGUE 27
We asked to have an idea of your design intentions about 4 questions foundamental for our client by means of references to existing contemporary buildings. You added a not requested repetition of your project. This led to initial confusion and bewilderment by our client. The asked questions concerned all your buildings. However, the scale of your references are in scale with the project goals in the East Side Gallery which must maintain its identity as "The largest open air Museum in the world" without being crowded by new buildings. Small buildings, pavilions rather than real buildings. Go ahead
SPAZIERGANG 28
Clear and concise response to the proposed client's questions. Mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Go ahead with caution
ROOTS BEYOND 28
The answer to the 4 client's questions was not so not direct as we were waiting for. Anyway the scale of the buildings in your project is right, in order to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Further reduce the dimension of the proposed buildings and go ahead with caution.
FUTURE BEHIND 28
Clear and concise response to the proposed client's questions. Absolutely mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Go ahead with caution
ELEMENTAL
27
Correct response to the proposed client's questions. The proposed references are not in scale with the East Side Gallery dimension, so absolutely mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Go ahead with caution
CRACK 27
Correct response to the proposed client's questions. Of the proposed references probably just the shed by Scofidio is in scale with the East Side Gallery dimension, so absolutely mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Go ahead with caution
HARBOUR OF ENCOUNTER 27
Correct response to the proposed client's questions. Of the proposed references probably just the English National Balet by Glenn Howell is in scale with the East Side Gallery dimension, so absolutely mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Go ahead with caution
BRIDGEING THE GAP 29
Correct response to the proposed client's questions. You have also matched with nearly all your references the scale of the East Side Gallery dimension, so go ahead absolutely going on minding the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world".
HUMAN RESONANCE 27
You correctly answered the proposed client’s questions. But you didn’t match the right scale for the East Side Gallery in your references. So take absolutely care about the fact that the East Side must remain as it is called today "The largest open air museum in the world". We need there pavillons more than real buildings. Go ahead and make your best.
2SIDE GALLERY 27
Correct response to the proposed client's questions. Of the proposed references probably just the Westland Town Hall and the Vennesla Library are in scale with the East Side Gallery dimension, so absolutely mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Go ahead with caution
HIDE AND SPREEK 29
Our client was confused in the beginning by the inclusion of your master plan in the answer to his questions but then admitted that the answers are correct. The scale of the buildings you proposed as references is wrong for the dimension and nature of an area that must maintain the character of what it already is: "The largest open air museum in the world". However, the client greatly appreciated the inclusion of Tadao Ando's architecture in the references, which is very suitable for the needs of the area. Take that into great account. Go ahead and do your best.
WEG FREI 27
Correct response to the proposed client's questions. Of the proposed references probably just the Kaganawa Institute and the Sant’Elia School are in scale with the East Side Gallery dimension, so absolutely mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real huge buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". Go ahead with caution
LIFE BRIDGE 27
Correct response to the proposed client's questions. Of the proposed references probably none is in scale with with the East Side Gallery dimension, so absolutely mind the scale of the buildings in your project. They need to be pavilions rather than real huge buildings to keep the East Side Gallery as it is today called "The largest open air museum in the world". A California Academy sunk into the ground might be a good idea. Just Go ahead with caution
With this act, the consultancy office of the competition simulation for the East Side Gallery 2024-2025 concludes its work and bids farewell to you.
January 08th, 2025
To simplify everyone's work, it is necessary that you all learn to carefully read the documents that the Design Studio constantly publishes in short form on the chat and subsequently in official form on this webpage.
The latest document really answers all the questions in a simple, linear, formal way, including the issue of the new deadlines and the motivation of the requests (the slides/images which are 3 references for each topic x 4 topics = 12). We need your point of view regarding the form of the buildings (considered as a set) in relation with the indicated fundamental issues (transparency... )
An important final warning from the Consulting Office: Berlin is a city with a strong urban and architectural identity as an urban factory. Renderings that showed the project not on the Spree, a small, monumental urban river on both banks but on an undefined water of the Persian Gulf or Aral Lake, would be very very little appreciated.
January 06th, 2025
According with the recently published calendar of the Faculty on infostud, the final dates of the design studio are definitively fixed as it follows: Submission of the last phase deadline (without presentation) on Thursday the 16th of January. Exams day, after infostud, 23rd of January (with public presentation).
December 23th, 2024
Dear all. The Consulting office of the simulation of the international competition for the Berlin East Side Gallery area is not allowed to provide any solution for the competition, it must only briefly express an evaluation of the solutions presented and a comparative numerical value between the projects currently submitted. This means that in a hypothetical SWOT analysis at this moment the project scored 30 meets the general needs of the competition better than the project scored 27. For the last step I remind you that we are not simulating the detailed project but a unitary urban solution for the 4 proposed buildings. Remember "unitary urban solution". The urban designer must partially abandon his individuality designing a building that must be part of the city strongly correlated with its surroundings. Otherwise it would have been better for him to attend a master in "Object design". It is a delicate moment, because it could even affect the team's ability to deliver the project or deliver a project that can only be evaluated with a low final score. Everyone must give their contribution and if the rest of the Team deems the contribution inadequate, the Team will present the project without the name of those who did not provide their contribution. You can reduce the renderings in the final presentation even if they are part of the important item "communication" of the urban regeneration project. But again remember that you are not in a master in urban make-up but in a master in urban regeneration. While in the next few weeks you will work on the set of your 4 buildings, the client himself asks you for your position, made up of graphic and photographic references of contemporary architecture, on four issues 1. The transparency of the building as an element of democracy, 2 The coherence of the external envelope of the building with the surrounding blocks of the city, 3 The organization of the interior of the building as a city within the building, 4 The close connection between the organization of the horizontal and vertical paths, their orientation of their aggregation in particular nodes outside and inside the building. In order to burn just one reference, the Consulting Office suggests for point 3 to visit Tiburtina Station in Rome with its minor buildings inside the main container building. Obviously it is a building totally out of scale for the East Side Gallery. We also point out that the transparency of the building, matching the Berlin block from outside containing a more organic and mixtilinear core, can be an excellent tool to create the relationship between the building and the surrounding urban context that has been a weak element in many proposals. The client expects from each one a ppt of 3 slides with a few notes of existing projects for the 4 issues of interest. This is a very common method of a declaration of intent, as requested in the selection of designers for the first stages of the competition, so absolutely part of our teaching program! This step therefore include a presentation. Just uploading in the usual way and quick assignment of a score. In summary: Upload deadline 10th of January 0:00 (GMT+1); Scores and closing of any activity of the consulting office 13th of January; Exam day 21st of January. The consultancy office wish for you all a 💯new year.

MASTERPLANS Scores & Comments
CRACK 30
In your masterplsn is very interesting the network of multitasking similar elements, both on the water and on the riverbank. Go ahead so, but be very very careful that the buildings is able to express the sense of the physical tradition of the Belin blocks fabric.
HARBOUR OF ENCOUNTERS 27
We have strong doubts that the bag-like shapes of your buildings are suitable to express a morphological and formal relationship with the tradition and context of Berlin block buildings, which is the main objective of an urban regeneration intervention in the existing city.
LIFE BRIDGE 26
Every general logic refers to a completely basic sign that runs through large low quality planes along the river and the Wall without great features. The modular system chosen for the buildings in this phase remains a banal game of overlapping pawns that hardly promise to escape from a mechanical composition of the result.
HUMAN RESONANCE 28
It is a very advanced master plan for the riverbank sector. You have decided not to establish connections across the river. It is a reasonable position but think about it again. We have doubts whether the shape of the buildings can correspond to the tradition of Berlin urban blocks fabric.
FUTURE BEHIND 30
Great organization in the masterplan of the network of urban and local relations. Everything measured, balanced and well proportioned. Make an effort to match the shape of the buildings to the physical context of the Berlin block.
3RE 26
A fragmented masterplan without a strong overall logic. A single connection to the other bank, out of proportion with the other proposed elements. A second connection above the Wall that looks like a mechanical arm rather than a connecting element. Very ordinary functions, distant from the needs of an area that wants to qualify for its new iconic function
BEYOND WALLS 27
The master plan is disappointing compared to the concept. The articulation of the left part does not match the shape of the new walkway over the water. The walkway is broken, solved in a poorly motivated way with its variable section and excluded from the rest. The shape of the proposed buildings presents difficulties in adapting to the urban block factory of the surrounding Berlin. It’s a pity
BERLIN BLEND 27
Among the most advanced and experimental masterplans in terms of urban design. On the other hand the relationship between the shape of the buildings and the urban tradition of the Berlin block fabric opens up many problems for a final solution that lives up to the premises.
ELEMENTAL 30
An elegant masterplan, consisting of a few linear signs on the riverbank, along the wall and across the water. With interesting architectural insights to cultivate. Buildings that recall the urban fabric of the surrounding blocks with a high capacity of reducing the scale in order to match the dimension of the area. A very delicate masterplan. Risky. Get something wrong or out-of-scale in the further development and you are lost.
SPAZIERGANG 27
The master plan structure in the relationship between green-water-built up space is among the most innovative and experimental of the design studio. On the contrary, it seems almost impossible to meet the tradition of Berlin building blocks with your round forms of architecture, Reflect.
BRIDGING THE GAP 30
Experimental and innovative, balanced, articulated. With the best connections on the water and on the Wall. Excellent opportunity to match with the new buildings the Berlin block building tradition. Keep going like this without getting notions…
LIGHTBOUND 30
Simple, linear, coherent. With a good possibility of organizing the buildings in strong relation with the typological and morphological model of the Berlin block. Squeeze your figure in the water towards the riverbank for hydraulic reasons and go ahead like this
WEG FREI 25
The shape of the buildings seems incapable of grasping a relationship with the urban blocks of Berlin. The placement of the buildings in the master plan is random and does not allow any distributive relationship between interior and exterior. The part in the water is uncertain, without any doubt still to be reduced and better defined
DER DIALOG 30
Interesting and significant is the red line that simply connects the parts of the city affected by the master plan. The relationship between water and greenery in the new arrangement of the riverbank is very balanced and formally adequate. The shapes of the buildings are very advanced and allow for a strong relationship with the context. Keep going like this without getting a big head
2SIDE GALLERY 30
The masterplan design is very advanced. The buildings promise a relationship between the general plan of the area and the internal plans. The bridges are too squat for pedestrian walkways. I think the curved shape on the water should be avoided for hydraulic reasons
ROOTS BEYOND 25
The idea of the concept has still to be tranformed in urban forms of buildings coherently with the urban surroundings. The set of meanders proposed for the elements and the open areas located between the two banks of the river, the Wall and the areas beyond the wall remain fragmented and in strong opposition to the surrounding buildings. A set of green areas without the ability to give the urban sector greater strength in design. The roots are too weak to become urban architecture.
NEUTÜR 24
A master plan too basic and elementary for this phase of the project. This is not the time to design small gardens in the free areas on the two riverbanks and beyond the wall. This is the time for urban design ideas without which all the action on the East Side Gallery is a job for gardeners.
A BRIDGE BETWEEN 27
What a pity! An interesting collage of references and a general plan too basic for this phase of work. Graphic research is fundamental for communication and your general plan is almost insignificant. The urban surroundings are represented in a schematic and elementary way. We have no indication of the design reasons for such a singular, transversal bridge, broken in relation to the other project signs. The vote is on confidence. Do better!
BERLINK 30
The two bridges over the river are too heavy. If you think it is appropriate, anyway you could divide each one into two much thinner walkways, side by side. Or you can create for each bridge a small, but very very tapered green island in the middle of the current.
November 21st, 2024
Today we will simulate that the Client Consulting Office has opened a window for all participants in the competition where they can send the first images of the master plan in progress for a feasibility assessment. You can send the images to roberto.cherubini@uniroma1.it between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM with specific questions attached, so as not to get just a "Checked feasible/Go on".
November 19th, 2024
Starting today we will simulate that the Municipality of Berlin has opened an online window with a direct consultancy to the participants in the international competition for the regeneration of the East Side Gallery area until the presentation of the Masterplans. The consultancy will operate as follows: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, questions or pdf documents (noDWG) can be sent with a request for evaluation regarding the validity of the design choices to the email address roberto.cherubini@uniroma1.it The team of consultants consisting of me and Prof. Hassani will respond to each email within the next day, in the order of arrival. The clearer the problems expressed, the clearer the answers will be. We hope for a wide feedback on this opportunity, which is also common in the most important competitions.

On Thursday the 14th at 14:00 I'm going to present, dedicated to the entire design studio, a synthesis of the 4 conferences I held in the last 2 months in Italy, Spain, Kosovo and Algeria on the "Artificial Dune" as an original design model valid for seasides and river banks. An opportunity for Berlin too. I hope you are all present. Today the design studio program includes a new competition question-answer session. Send your possible questions to my institutional email and wait for an answer within the design studio time

October 31th, 2024
On October 29th, 19 teams presented their project concept. The evaluation criteria adopted by your consultants was based on the effectiveness of communication, both in terms of images and speeches. The scores express a synthetic opinion on the results. We are pleased to note that all teams still have the possibility of achieving the maximum evaluation in the final score according to the rules of the competition simulation (22+30+30): 3 + 3 = 30.
The BERLINK concept was heavily penalized by late delivery compared to the deadline, risking being excluded for no-show.
The Design Studio program continues next Tuesday with the presentation of the second phase of the work: The Masterplan.

Updated Program
The written question-answer method, typical of a design competition, continues.
We have already answered many questions in the previous consultation hours.
In the simulation proposed by the design studio, the educational goal is to develop a communication method that is valid for both parties. Questions require synthesis and clarity, while understanding the answers requires the ability to fully grasp the meaning of the messages.
We are also responding to emails today as soon as they are received between 2 and 7 pm

Updated Program
Considering the number of the teams enrolled in the Design Studio for the simulation of the International Competition for East Side Gallery, Berlin, the presentation will take place during one online meeting only, on the 29th of October 14:00-19:00
Remind of some important rules regarding the presentation.
- The presentation is mandatory to remain enrolled in the Design Studio
- The presentation ppt must be sent by the strict deadline of 00:00 on October 29th to the professors' email address
- Later sending will be considered no-show
- The ppt must have between 10 and 15 slides and the presentation must last no more than ten minutes.
- The slides can be composed of materials of any type: Images, sketches, drawings, written elements, with the aim of synthetically representing your project idea in relation with the surrounding town and its culture.
- The concept presented must have a name on the first slide with all the names of the team members
- At the end of the presentation you will have a short comment from us as your advisors
- In the meeting following October 29th you will be given a synthetic grade out of thirtieths
- The Design Studio includes 3 mandatory presentations
- The final exam grade will be determined by a maximum increase of 3 points compared to the average of the scores obtained in the presentations. (By the way, as you probably already know this is the method for determining the grade of your final master's diploma with respect to all the exams taken)
Good work everyone. The next meeting is online on Tuesday the 22nd.

The list of the ordinary registered students, of the Erasmus students and of the exchanging students of the design studio will be completed up to the number (20) accepted by the Faculty
The semester's project theme concerns again, after some years of design experimentation, a significant area of the Spree riverbank in Berlin, to be regenereted from an urban and architectural point of view with a mix of permanent and temporary architectures suitable for functions related to public use.
The aim is to give the area, by means of a new architecture, the iconic features it deserves as a place of memory of the recent history of the city. This aim must be pursued with a careful balance of the project between attention to the context and architectural innovation.
The design studio is a learning-by-doing process with the support of introductory communications and with the participation of external experts during the program.
Considering the wide range of skills needed for a complex urban regeneration project, students are required to form teams of 4 designers with possibly complementary skills. One of the most considered skills, both in drawings and presentation is "communication".
The evaluation of the final project will be based on the categories "Concept", "Masterplan", "Building architecture", with critics on intermediate deliveries.

As already announced, the Design Studio ends on January the 25th, 2024 with an important day of exams organized, in a room to be communicated, in two sessions, the first from 10am to 1pm, the second from 3pm to 7pm . All teams are invited to participate presenting their projects in this date. Subsequently the exams will continue on the scheduled dates of the official calendar but having missed one of the learning objectives announced by the Design Studio - the correct management of design time - the maximum obtainable score (30 to 28) will no longer be assigned.
To participate in the exam day presentation, the teams must send a ppt of their project to the addresses roberto.cherubini@uniroma1.it and elham.k.hassani@gmail.com within the deadline of 0:00 am of the 25th, clearly indicating the composition of the team and the preference for the morning or afternoon presentation session . Confirmation will be sent immediately after 0:00.
Late submissions will not be for any reason accepted. The presentation will have a maximum available time of 20 minutes for each project, at the end of which the professors could ask questions.
The score of all projects will be communicated publicly and published on this page at the end of the day (7:00 pm).
Students have the right to refuse the grade assigned with an email sent to the aforementioned addresses by midnight on the same day, January 25th, presenting themselves again on the subsequent dates with the above given warnings.

Once the first phase of the Design Studio's work has been concluded with the presentation and criticism of all the concepts by the students, the program for Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 consists of the personal viewing of 3 iconic films about the town of Berlin, location of the project. This is also to clarify the difference between "usual work" and "iconic work" which closely concerns the proposed theme of urban regeneration in the East Side Gallery of Berlin.
Both design and film making can be usual or iconic activities. Usual is following the primary needs of the site/scene. Iconic is following the need of identity of the place/film. Usual is functional/entertainment. Iconic is narrative.
The East Side Gallery site need a new iconic identity. A design-inspired narration of its future possible identity.
3 iconic films on Berlin to be seen:
