CV Prof. Eng. Andrea Cappelli
Engineer, Senior Researcher, and Teaching Professor at Sapienza University of Rome, Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Materials and Environment (DICMA).

Current teaching activities
 Professor of ASSESSMENT AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES – Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering (Rome Campus), 6 ECTS, course taught in English.
 Professor of LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES – Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering (Latina Campus), 9 ECTS, course taught in Italian.

28 years of academic experience at Sapienza University of Rome, Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering and DICMA.

Main Research Areas
 Assessment of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) in renewable energy systems and energy transition technologies, with focus on resource availability, supply risk, and sustainability performance.
 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the production of goods and services, including renewable energy systems and electric mobility technologies; energy and environmental balance of renewable energy production and use. Ecolabelling and environmental certification of goods and services (Environmental Product Declaration, European Ecolabel), with focus on the role of Critical Raw Materials in sustainable energy transitions.
 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of extractive industries and raw material processing, aimed at quantifying environmental impacts and resource efficiency along the production chain.
 Development of new Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) indicators for Critical Raw Material (CRM) depletion and supply risk, aimed at improving the representation of abiotic resource scarcity and supporting sustainability assessment in energy transition technologies.
 Sustainable management of renewable and non-renewable resources, with emphasis on resource efficiency, circular use of materials, and long-term environmental sustainability of production systems.
 Application of Remote Sensing and GIS techniques for the assessment, monitoring, and spatial characterization of environmental and natural resources, supporting sustainability analysis and land-use planning.
 Application of environmental accounting and spatial analysis tools to evaluate the interactions between natural and built environments, and to quantify pressures from human activities on ecosystems.

Experience in national and international projects
Prof. Andrea Cappelli has over thirty years of experience in the participation and coordination of national and international research projects. Among these, he has served as:
 scientific expert in two cooperation projects financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Angola (1994-97 and 1999-2001).
 scientific coordinator (DICMA): “SIGEK 2000” project (2000-2002, developed in Khouribga, Morocco) financed by the European Union.
 scientific coordinator (DICMA): “Comunità Montana del Velino” project (2004-2006) for the identification and monitoring of environmental characteristics in the Velino Community territory to obtain the EMAS registration, financed by the Lazio Region.
 scientific coordinator (DICMA): AGRIECO project (2003-2005), financed by the Forlì-Ravenna Province and the Emilia-Romagna Region.
 Head of Research Unit (DICMA), Sapienza University of Rome - PRIN 2009 – “Space–time relationships between N₂O emissions and agroenergetic crop production; phytoremediation potential of oilseed crops in heavy metal–contaminated soils”. Funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (2009-2013).
 Deputy Coordinator - FP7 Collaborative Project “BIOWALK4BIOFUELS – Biowaste and Algae Knowledge for the Production of 2nd Generation Biofuels” (FP7-ENERGY-2009-1-RTD). Development of an integrated system using biowaste, industrial GHG emissions, and macroalgae for the sustainable production of 2nd-generation biofuels. Funded by the European Commission (2010-2015).
Moreover, he participated in other projects developed in Albania and Brazil. He was Conference Manager of the International Conference "Energy Environment and Technological Innovation" – EETI2004 (Rio de Janeiro, RioCentro, Brazil, 4-7 October 2004).
