FIELDS OF RESEARCH
- Plant physiology and biology
- Biochemistry and glycomics
- Plant cell wall, related enzymes and their inhibitors
- Molecular mechanisms of plant-pathogen interaction and plant immunity
- Phytovaccines
- Upcycling of agroindustrial waste into bioproducts and bioenergy
- Optimization of enzymatic saccharification for biofuel production

RESEARCH ACTIVITY
Prof. Lionetti has extensive experience in studying the role of the plant cell wall in plant-microbe interactions. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of how plants detect cell wall (CW) damage caused by pathogen attacks and how they modulate CW remodeling enzymes and their inhibitors to maintain cell wall integrity. He demonstrated that the regulation of the expression of pectin methylesterase and its inhibitors in plants represents a useful tool to modify the esterification of pectin, the degradability of CW by microbes and improve resistance to pathogens. He also proposed biotechnological applications to improve the saccharification of CW polysaccharides in the lignocellulosic biomass, the quality of plant products, and the isolation of protoplasts. Recently, Prof. Lionetti has also applied his skills to optimize bioconversion processes and the valorization of agroindustrial waste into phytovaccines and other bioproducts.
