Whose Past? Managing Endangered Cultural Heritage
 
The program aims to educate students on the issues of the destruction and protection of both tangible and intangible heritage.
In an era of demographic, urban, and climatic pressures, as well as ongoing wars at the gates of Europe, heritage is increasingly subjected to threats of destruction, sometimes accidental, sometimes intentional. The program seeks to explore political issues and the instrumentalization of heritage by state actors. Students are encouraged to develop a critical, constructive, and inclusive response to these challenges.
By gaining expertise in national and international legal frameworks, students will also develop awareness and practical tools (such as mediation and digitalization) that can be shared by institutional decision-makers and citizens alike. The teaching team’s expertise, drawn from diverse backgrounds and countries, with a particular focus on ancient Western Asia—where issues of endangered cultural heritage have been particularly pressing in recent years—will offer students a broad and varied perspective.
Furthermore, archives of UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as Arslantepe, Palmyra, and Petra, will be presented to students, offering relevant case studies where experiments with digital tools have yielded valuable insights.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course, the students will:

• be able to interpret what defines heritage at risk;
• identify examples of heritage at risk;
• reach agreements on how to intervene to save it;
• know (at least part of) the history behind this heritage;
• become aware of the political issues and risks of instrumentalization related to both the definition and management of Cultural Heritage;
• become familiar with basic international and national norms and Legal framework related to Cultural Heritage;
• identify, analyse and anticipate risks incurred by Cultural Heritage in its multiple formats and define the accurate answers to provide, taking advantage of past experiences, including errors;
• use digital humanities as a knowledge and prevention tool;
• develop inclusiveness and co-responsibilities of audiences.

Titolo del corso: 
La geografia economica di Ebla nel Bronzo Antico: analisi contestuale dei dati archeologici e paleobotanici
 
Il corso è incentrato sull'archeologia e sull'economia di Ebla nel III millennio a.C. Il corso affronta aspetti relativi all'approvvigionamento e alla gestione delle risorse, all'immagazzinamento e alla lavorazione e alla formazione della città in funzione di questi elementi.
Il corso si compone di una parte di lezioni frontali e di approfondimenti in aula su letture scelte e concordate.
 
NOTA BENE: l'esame con codice 1035775 è un esame integrato da 12 CFU composto di due moduli(6 + 6). Per conseguire i 12 CFU, la studentessa e lo studente devono aver seguito questo corso e il corso della Prof.ssa Marta D'Andrea.

10611921 ARCHEOLOGIA DEL SACRO: FORME E SPAZI DEL CULTO NEL VICINO ORIENTE ANTICO
 
Il corso di Archeologia del sacro: forme e spazi del culto nel Vicino Oriente antico affronta il complesso sistema di analisi degli indicatori del sacro in ambito archeologico. Partendo dagli studi pionieristici di Colin Renfrew, il corso intende illustrare e analizzare i sistemi metodologici e il quadro teorico di riferimento per poter fornire alle studentesse e agli studenti di religioni del mondo antico e di archeologia gli strumenti per la comprensione dei fenomeni del sacro, nelle sue vari sfaccettature e accezioni, nelle culture del Vicino Oriente antico.
Il corso si compone di una parte di lezioni frontali e di approfondimenti in aula su letture scelte e concordate.

Davide Nadali è professore associato in Archeologia e storia dell'arte del Vicino Oriente antico presso il Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Antichità, Sapienza Università di Roma).
Nel 2006, ha conseguito presso il medesimo ateneo un dottorato di ricerca in Archeologia Orientale con uno studio sulla composizione narrativa dei rilievi assiri di VII secolo a.C. Dal 2008 al 2010 è stato assegnista post-dottorato presso l’Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane di Firenze con una ricerca sull’organizzazione bellica della Mesopotamia protodinastica. Negli anni 2010-2011 è stato professore a contratto di Archeologia e storia dell’arte del Vicino Oriente antico presso l’Università degli Studi di Parma.
Dal 1998 partecipa regolarmente alle campagne di scavo presso il sito di Tell Mardikh-Ebla (Siria). Dal 2010 è coinvolto nel progetto di ricerca, finanziato dai fondi europei ERC, sullo studio della regione di Ebla nel terzo millennio a.C. con funzioni di coordinamento sul campo, assieme a Maria Gabriella Micale, di una ricognizione e sondaggi nei siti di Tell Munbatah e Tell Sabka.
I suoi principali interessi di ricerca riguardano: arte, architettura e urbanistica di età neo-assira, lo studio della guerra nel Vicino Oriente antico e l’analisi della produzione e dell’impatto delle immagini nell’antica Mesopotamia (uso, riuso ed abuso dell’immagine) tramite l’applicazione delle recenti scoperte neuronali nella ricezione ed elaborazione dell’immagine.
Nel 2012, il suo progetto di ricerca "Cronologia attraverso i colori: analisi dei manufatti dipinti nei loro contesti, archeologici, storici e sociali", di cui è coordinatore nazionale, è stato finanziato per tre anni nell'ambito dei finanziamenti MIUR FIRB-Futuro in Ricerca 2012.
Nel 2017, ha ottenuto il finanziamento triennale PRIN per il progetto "Fluid Crescent. Water and Life in the Societies of the Ancient Near East" di cui è PI.
Nel 2022, ha ottenuto il finanziamento biennale PRIN per il progetto "The Environmental, Economic and Social Geography of Ebla in the 3rd millennium BC: A Connected World" di cui è PI.
Dal 2014 è direttore della Missione Archeologica Italiana a Nigin nel sito di Tell Zurghul, l'antica Nigin dello Stato di Lagash, in Iraq meridionale.
Dal 2023 è direttore della Missione Archeologica Italiana in Siria (Tell Mardikh-Ebla) e coordina l'Ebla Project per lo studio e la promozione dell'antica cultura eblaita.

Davide Nadali is Associate Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology and Art History at the Department of Ancient Studies, Sapienza University of Rome.
In 2006, he earned a PhD in Oriental Archaeology from the same university with a study on the narrative composition of 7th-century BC Assyrian reliefs. From 2008 to 2010, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Italian Institute of Human Sciences in Florence, conducting research on the military organization of early dynastic Mesopotamia. In 2010-2011, he was an adjunct professor of Near Eastern Archaeology and Art History at the University of Parma.
Since 1998, he has regularly participated in excavation campaigns at the site of Tell Mardikh-Ebla (Syria). Since 2010, he has been involved in the ERC-funded research project on the study of the Ebla region in the third millennium BC. He coordinated fieldwork, together with Maria Gabriella Micale, for a survey and surveys at the sites of Tell Munbatah and Tell Sabka.
His main research interests include Neo-Assyrian art, architecture, and urban planning, the study of warfare in the ancient Near East, and the analysis of the production and impact of images in ancient Mesopotamia (use, reuse, and abuse of images) through the application of recent neural discoveries in image reception and processing.
In 2012, his research project "Chronology through Colors: Analysis of Painted Artifacts in Their Archaeological, Historical, and Social Contexts," of which he is the national coordinator, was funded for three years under the MIUR FIRB-Futuro in Ricerca 2012 grant.
In 2017, he received a three-year PRIN grant for the project "Fluid Crescent. Water and Life in the Societies of the Ancient Near East," of which he is the Principal Investigator.
In 2022, he received a two-year PRIN grant for the project "The Environmental, Economic, and Social Geography of Ebla in the 3rd Millennium BC: A Connected World," of which he is the Principal Investigator.
Since 2014, he has been director of the Italian Archaeological Mission to Nigin at the site of Tell Zurghul, ancient Nigin in the state of Lagash, southern Iraq.
Since 2023, he has been director of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Syria (Tell Mardikh-Ebla) and coordinates the Ebla Project for the study and promotion of ancient Eblaite culture.
