Structural and functional characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Bacteria: general organization, morphology, and physiology. The bacterial spore. The pathogenic action of bacteria: virulence factors and toxins.
Fungi: morphology and reproduction.
Viruses: structure and composition of the viral particle. Replication, assembly, and release.
Exogenous and endogenous infections, sources and routes of transmission of infections.
Parasitic protozoa: morphological characteristics of the main medically important groups. Life cycles and infection strategies.
Control of microorganisms: disinfection and sterilization. Vaccines for the prevention of microbial diseases.
Antimicrobial agents: antibiotics and antibiogram. Antiprotozoal drugs.
