General overview of pathological processes. Concept of homeostasis. Definition of disease.
Fundamental terminology: Pathology, pathogenesis, etiology, disease state, syndrome, symptom, diagnosis, prognosis.
Diseases: Criteria for classifying diseases. Factors that predispose to the development of a disease: exogenous and endogenous causes of disease. Infectious diseases
Inflammation: Definition and general characteristics. Acute inflammation: cells involved in the inflammatory process; chemical mediators of inflammation; microcirculatory changes in acute inflammation; exudate formation. Phagocytosis. Chronic inflammation. Abscess. Ulcer. Granulomatous inflammation.
Hyperthermia: Febrile and non-febrile hyperthermia. Thermogenesis, heat loss, thermoregulation. Hypothermia. Leukocytosis, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Acute phase proteins.
Cellular pathology, cellular adaptations: atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, metaplasia, dysplasia. Cell damage and death.
Fibrosis: Wound healing. Resolution, regeneration, repair. Local and systemic factors influencing wound healing. Pathological aspects of repair.
Tumors: definition of tumor. The neoplastic cell. Characteristics of benign and malignant tumors. Criteria for tumor nomenclature and classification (histogenetics, grading, staging). The carcinogenesis process. The causes of tumors: genetic, physical, chemical, biological, hormonal.
