Course objectives

At the end of the course the students will have to provide more deepened knowledge of subjects of specific interest to acquire more skills in their field of study. The students will have to know the demographic aspects, the prevention and treatment of oral and dental diseases, in the developmental, adult and geriatric age, even in the medically compromised patient or psycho-physical disabled, with specific deepening for the pathologies / preventive procedures and therapeutics pertaining to the dental hygienist's clinical activity. At the end of the course the students must be able to use the acquired knowledge in order to practice the complete range of the operative procedures of the professional profile, on the dentist's indication and in the context of the global treatment of the patient without producing additional risks for him.

Teaching mode

Exam mode
The evaluation consists of an aptitude to be achieved following the evaluation of the internship and attendance, active participation, reasoning skills and self-study.

Course program
This course introduces students to analysing human skeletal remains from archaeological contexts, focusing on dentition. Students will learn dental anatomy, development and eruption, morphology, variation, pathologies, and the biocultural ways humans use their teeth. The topics of the course are: • Funerary archaeology • Human skeletal anatomy • Estimation of sex and age-at-death • Paleopathology • Dental anthropology • Nutrition and diet
Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required for this activity.

For reference and further study, the recommended books are: 1) Hillson S., 2024. Dental Anthropology, Cambridge University Press, Second Edition. 2) Minozzi S., Canci A., 2015. Archeologia dei resti umani. dallo scavo al laboratorio. Carocci editore In-depth articles will be suggested during the lectures.
Frequency
The course includes traditional lessons. Attendance is mandatory.
Exam mode
Assessment consists of active participation during the lessons and 100% attendance
Lesson mode
The course comprises traditional lectures, during which students will be introduced to various concepts related to bioarchaeology and dental anthropology. Attendance is compulsory, and only full attendance will earn students ADE credits.

Course program
Emergencies in Maxillo-facial surgery: management and control of bleeding of the maxillo-facial district, anterior and posterior nasal packing, external carotid artery ligation, emergency tracheostomy and management of the patient. Maxillo-Facial Trauma: maxillo-facial fractures, classification of fractures according to Le Fort Stage, cheekbone fractures, nasal fractures, frontal bone fractures, mandibular fractures, panfacial fractures, complex fractures of the Maxillo-Facial district, diagnosis and principles of treatment. Maxillo-mandibular malformations: type of occlusione, progenic syndrome, Prognatic syndrome, mandibular lateral deviations Congenital malformations: Classification of craniosynostosis, syndromic craniosynostosis, craniofacial dysostosis, cleft-palate, first and second branchial arch syndrome Salivary gland disorders: anatomy and physiology of the salivary glands, major inflammatory pathologies, sialolithiasis, sialadenitis, benign and malignant salivary gland tumors Oral and Maxillo-Facial Oncology: pathogenesis, Classification of Tumours, diagnosis and priciples of therapy of oral and maxillofacial tumors, diagnosis and staging of maxillo-facial tumors, principles of reconstructive surgery. Temporomandibular Joint disorders: Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, ankylosis, dislocation, limitations of mouth opening.
Prerequisites
Essential prerequisites for understanding the topics covered in the module are adequate knowledge of the pre-clinical course subjects with particular attention to the knowledge of Human Anatomy, Embryology, Physiology and Histolog

Teaching mode
The teacher delivers the lectures and distance teaching according to current regulations with traditional methods, with audiovisual aids and with scheduling of the lectures as reported on the GOMP System / Timetable System and published on the CdS website.
Exam mode
Oral examination; to pass the exam it is necessary to obtain a mark of not less than 18/30 in each module. Failure to pass a module will make it impossible to continue examining and canceling the marks obtained in the other modules.

Prerequisites
In order to understand the teaching content and to achieve the learning objectives, before completing the planned seminar activities the student must have followed the lessons related to the teaching object of the ADE.
Books
The teacher responsible for the ADE makes available handouts and scientific articles to the students.
Frequency
As reported in the art. 4 of the Regulations for the institutional positions of the health professions study courses "the elective teaching activity (ADE) constitutes an integral part of the training curriculum, attendance is mandatory."
Exam mode
The verification of the achievement of the defined training objectives and then the verbalization of the acquired CFU takes place through a written test (multiple choice quiz) to which the students are subjected at the end of the ADE.
Lesson mode
The teacher provides seminar activities using traditional methods, with audiovisual aids and with scheduling of the same as planned and agreed with the UdP of the CdS.
