Course program
Teaching programme:
• Classification of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa). Structural and functional characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
• Bacteria: general organisation, morphology and physiology. Bacterial spores. The pathogenic action of bacteria: virulence factors and toxins.
• Fungi: morphology and reproduction.
• Viruses: structure and composition of the viral particle. Replication, assembly and release.
• Exogenous and endogenous infections, sources and routes of transmission of infections.
• Parasitic protozoa: morphological characteristics of the main groups of medical importance. Biological cycles and infection strategies.
• Control of microorganisms: disinfection and sterilisation. Vaccines for the prevention of microbial diseases.
• Antimicrobial agents. Antibiotics and antibiograms. Antiprotozoal drugs.
