Course program
During the third year, the student acquires the knowledge, skills and attitudes that satisfy the expectations required by the training path: autonomy, responsibility, management.
At the end of the third year of training, the student must:
• independently manage the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phase
• interpret the analytical data and proceed with any validation of the same
• deliver the correct fulfillment of analytical procedures, the application of work protocols, the control and maintenance of laboratory
instruments with professional technical autonomy
• having acquired behavioral rules in the specific work context, so as to guarantee mastery of all the necessary skills and their immediate use in
the work environment;
• have acquired specific technical-diagnostic-professional skills in:
CLINICAL PATHOLOGY
Performing blood count tests with automatic analyzers
Preparation of hematological preparations for microscopic examination for the determination of the leukocyte formula and reticulocytes with routine staining
Optical microscopic observation of hematological preparations to identify normal elements
Execution of typing techniques of blood groups (ABO, Rh), direct and indirect Coombs test, compatibility tests
Performing assays in immunometry, radioimmunology, nephelometry, chromatography
Performing the chemical / physical examination of the urine, with preparation of the preparations for the microscopic examination of the sediment and knowing the main elements of greatest clinical evidence
Preparation of preparations for chemical-physical examination of the stool and the search for occult blood
Reading and interpretation of electrophoretic traces of plasma proteins
Performing the main coagulation tests (PT, PTT, antithrombin and fibrinogen)
MICROBIOLOGY
Preparation of preparations of various biological materials for observation under an optical microscope
Execution of the main and suitable colors and identification of the main morphological characteristics of microorganisms
Selection of the appropriate culture media according to the biological sample to be examined
Execution of subcultures and transplants of bacterial jambs
Execution of the various tests for the identification of the most frequently encountered clinical organisms
Preparation of antibiograms and interpretation of the results
Preparation of preparations for research of parasites, fungi and dermatophytes
PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY
Acceptance and registration of cytological samples and anatomical pieces
Preparation of cytological preparations
Execution of routine and special cytological stains
Preparation of histological preparations
Execution of the microtome and cryostat cut
Preparation of the slides with the sections obtained
Execution of routine and special histological stains

Execution of techniques for the preparation of preparations for electron microscopy
Management of the inclusions and slides archive
Apply autoptic techniques
Apply the conservation and disposal procedures for anatomical pieces
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
Execution of manual techniques and in automation of extraction amplification in PCR End Point and Real Time PCR, hybridization, detection, genotyping and sequencing of nucleic acids
Prerequisites
In order to be able to attend the internship in the analysis laboratories of the Umberto I polyclinic, students must comply with the prerequisites required for the year of the course.
Books
The tutor provides the student with the teaching material and laboratory protocols where the internship takes place.
Teaching mode
During the third year, students must attend the clinical analysis laboratories located within the Umberto I Polyclinic and La Sapienza University, according to the shifts assigned to them, in order to reach a frequency of 625 hours. During this time, students must work, in collaboration with the supervisor, on the topic of the future thesis.
Exam mode
The internship exam takes place in the presence of a commission made up of 4 tutors who followed the student during the practical training in the laboratories and the didactic director, the mark out of thirty is assigned through an overall evaluation of the internship period and with a final exam both oral than I practice.
