Course program
Fundamental characteristics of life. Chemical constituents of living matter. The cell as a biological unit; prokaryotes and eukaryotes; common and differential characteristics of cytotypes. The central dogma of biology: from DNA to RNA to proteins. DNA and RNA: structure and functions. Duplication and transcription. Genetic code and its properties. Protein synthesis: translation, post-translational events and post-synthetic fate of proteins. Regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Biological membranes: plasmalemma and intracytoplasmic systems (structure, functions and specializations). Cellular organelles: structure and functions and specializations. Cytoskeleton: microfilaments, microtubules, intermediate filaments; associated proteins and molecular motors: characteristics and functions common to all cytotypes and differential specializations. Cell cycle; mitosis and meiosis.
Prerequisites
Knowledge acquired in high school in cell biology (with basic molecular biology elements), general, inorganic, organic and biochemical chemistry
