General Objective of the Module:
Understand the role of the nurse in the following areas of nephrology: nursing assessment of parameters that expose patients to the risk of developing renal complications; management of patients with acute and chronic kidney disease, primarily in the hospital setting; understanding of diagnostic and instrumental methods in the field of renal disease and management of patients undergoing diagnostic and instrumental tests; management of patients undergoing renal replacement therapy.
Contents:
Review of the anatomy of the kidney and urinary tract, elements of renal physiology.
The nurse-hospitalized patient relationship in the field of renal disease: assessment of vital signs related to renal function; assessment of fluid balance; management of abdominal and pelvic drainage and stoma procedures. Nursing diagnosis.
Glomerular filtration rate, assessment, and the general concept of clearance. Overview of semiotics of the kidney and urinary tract. Oliguria, anuria, polyuria, and dysuric symptoms. Nocturia. Urinalysis and its alterations (hematuria, leukocyturia, cylindruria, urinary retention). Urine culture.
Notes on instrumental diagnostics. Renal biopsy.
Major nephrological diseases of interest to nursing: urinary tract infections, acute and chronic renal failure, nephritic syndrome and nephrotic syndrome, notes on glomerulonephritis, notes on cystic renal disease. Main risk factors for renal disease.
Indications and management of renal replacement therapy: hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation. Vascular access and peritoneal access.
