Course objectives

At the end of the course students will be able to acquire knowledge and technical skills - practical in 'scope of support to the patient in "critical area", meaning as a critical area not only the set of intensive and emergency facilities, but also the set of situations characterized by criticality of the patient and the nursing intervention complexity.

Course program
- Emergency and urgency in the territory: main definitions; organization of the emergency/urgent healthcare system in Italy; emergency vehicles and personnel 118; DEA and emergency room; Intra and extra hospital triage; DEA areas; maxiemergency and PEIMAF. - Nursing care in critical areas: intensive care unit, care units and basic care; hospital infections and hygiene care; triad pain-agitation- delirium and immobility. - Management of vascular access: selection criteria; CICC and PICC; types of CVP; anchoring systems and dressings; management of lumens and infusion lines; possible complications. - Multiparameter monitoring: basic and advanced vital parameters; hemodynamic monitoring and pressure transducers; zeroing procedures and square wave testing; Swan- Ganz catheter; respiratory monitoring; pulse oximetry and capnometry. - Assistance to patients with alterations of the respiratory system: signs and symptoms of respiratory failure; procedure and interpretation of blood gas analysis; procedures: bronchoscopy and thoracentesis; main respiratory diseases and nursing care; pronation; chest drainage. Airway management: oxygen therapy and airway patency; manual ventilation and IOT; mechanical ventilation and NIV; management of supraglottic devices and tracheostomy; endotracheal aspiration and extubation. - Assistance to patients with alterations of the cardiovascular system: Cardiac function parameters; signs and symptoms of heart failure; acute coronary syndromes, PDTA chest pain and cardiac catheterization; main cardiovascular pathologies and nursing care; procedures: pericardiocentesis and electrical cardioversion; implantable cardiac assist and nursing devices; main drugs. - Cardiopulmonary arrest and BLSD: cardiac and respiratory arrest; cardiopulmonary resuscitation: shockable rhythms, chain of survival and algorithms; unblocking of the airways; advanced life support; differences with pediatric blsd; emergency trolley and defibrillator. -Care of patients with alterations of the excretory system: renal failure: signs and symptoms, treatment and water balance; renal replacement therapy: types and functioning. - Assistance to patients with alterations of the digestive system: digestive hemorrhages and Sengstaken-Blakemore probe; acute abdomen and abdominal emergencies; Procedures: intra- abdominal pressure measurement and paracentesis. - Emergencies and urgencies in critical areas: sepsis and multiple organ failure; types of shock and treatment; resuscitation with intravenous fluids; emergencies from physical agents and treatment: burns, electric shock, hypothermia, hyperthermia and drowning. - Assistance to patients with alterations of the neurological system: neurological examination and state of consciousness; principles, techniques and phases of anesthesia; notification of death and organ donation. - Management of major trauma: definition of major trauma and territorial organization for trauma management; out-of-hospital management: evaluation phases; intra-hospital management priorities; immobilization and liberation techniques of victims.
