Course program
The role of the nurse in the critical surgical emergency area. Epidemiology of trauma and surgical emergency pathology. Initial assessment of the patient in an emergency. Shock management. Hemorrhage control. Abdominal trauma. Chest trauma. Cranioencephalic trauma. Vertebro-medullary trauma. Non-traumatic abdominal surgical emergencies: acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal perforation. Non-traumatic thoracic surgical emergencies: aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, spontaneous pneumothorax, empyema. Wounds. Burns. Compartment syndrome. Rhabdomyolysis. Nursing care for the critical surgical patient. Communication and relationship with the patient and family in the critical area.
Prerequisites
Cultural Prerequisites Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, with particular attention to the systems involved in surgical emergency pathologies (respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, nervous, musculoskeletal systems). Basic knowledge of pharmacology principles, with particular attention to drugs used in critical care (analgesics, anesthetics, vasopressors, inotropes, antibiotics, etc.). Basic knowledge of microbiology and hygiene principles, with particular attention to the prevention and control of infections in the surgical setting. Basic knowledge of psychology and communication principles, with particular attention to the relationship with the patient and family in stressful and emergency situations. Basic knowledge of the ethical and deontological principles of the nursing profession. Curricular Prerequisites Successful completion of basic nursing science courses, including those related to general nursing care, pharmacology, microbiology and hygiene, psychology and communication. Minimum clinical experience in a hospital setting, preferably in general medicine or surgery departments. Acquired basic skills in performing common nursing procedures, such as measuring vital signs, administering medications, managing airways and dressing wounds.

Teaching mode
The course will be delivered through traditional lectures, supported by multimedia presentations and dedicated teaching materials. Core theoretical aspects of the discipline will be presented, while student engagement will be encouraged through guided discussions, questions, and illustrative clinical case examples.
Frequency
Compulsory on site.
Exam mode
1- Discussion of clinical cases: Presentation of one or more realistic or simulated clinical cases, related to pathologies or emergency situations typical of the critical surgical area. The student must demonstrate that they can apply the acquired theoretical knowledge to analyze the case, identify priority problems, plan appropriate nursing interventions, and evaluate possible outcomes. The evaluation will be based on the student's ability to reason critically, use appropriate technical language, demonstrate decision-making skills, and communicate effectively. 2- Open-ended questions on specific topics of the program: The teacher will ask open-ended questions on key topics of the program to verify the understanding of fundamental concepts, the ability to connect information and provide concrete examples. The questions may concern both theoretical aspects (for example, the pathophysiology of a disease or the mechanism of action of a drug) and practical aspects (for example, the procedure for airway management or monitoring the critical patient). The evaluation will be based on the correctness and completeness of the answers, the ability to argue logically and use appropriate technical language. 3- Assessment of transversal skills: During the oral exam, the teacher will also be able to observe and evaluate the student's transversal skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively, work in a team, solve problems and manage stress. These skills can be assessed through specific questions or by observing the student's behavior during the discussion of clinical cases or practical simulations
