Course program
The course is designed to foster a comprehensive understanding of the principal dynamics underpinning urban discourse and development from the early modern period to the Baroque era. In light of the extensive chronological span and the plurality of cultural movements that shaped this epoch, the program adopts a thematic approach, articulated through the analysis of emblematic case studies. Leveraging the exceptional historical and architectural stratification of Rome (the Urbe), the didactic methodology will alternate between formal lectures and, where feasible, guided site visits. This dual modality aims to provide students with a panoramic overview while encouraging individual critical engagement through experiential learning. Rome's interventions will serve as foundational references, from which broader interpretative frameworks will be constructed, extending to regional and peninsular contexts. The course thus seeks to equip students with the analytical tools necessary to interrogate the evolution of urban form and architectural expression within a complex socio-cultural matrix.
Prerequisites
"Extensive expertise in the history of modern architecture, with a focus on the urban development of Rome.
