Course objectives

Knowledge of the main features of the institutional legal system of the European Union as well as the basic elements of the Internal Market of rules. Students having completed the course will acquire knowledge of the essential aspects of the EU institutional order, with specific regard to the organisation and functioning of the EU institutions, competences, legal sources and system of judicial protection.

OUTLINE THE EUROPEAN UNION LEGAL ORDER AND ITS EVOLUTION. Origins and developments of the European Communities (EC). The Maastricht Treaty on the European Union (EU). Nature and structure of the European Union. The Treaty of Amsterdam. The Treaty of Nice. The European Constitution. The Treaty of Lisbon. Enlargement of the EU. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEGAL ORDERS AND THE EU’S COMPETENCES. The unity of the EU legal order and its architecture.
