Course objectives

Learning outcomes: At the end of the course the student must: • Know how to perform a correct medical history in order to identify the main elements of the risk factors related to behavior and lifestyle habits. • Know how to perform the physical examination by looking for signs related to the symptoms reported • Know how to choose between laboratory and instrumental diagnostic tests those related to the suspected pathology • Formulate the diagnostic hypothesis by differential diagnoses • Choose the correct therapeutic procedure.

Course program
Contents: General concepts in infectious disease. HIV infection: epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical aspects, therapeutic approach and prevention. Viral hepatitis. Meningitis and encephalitis. Nosocomial infections. Respiratory infections and Tuberculosis. Herpes virus infection: CMV, EBV, VZV, HSV1/2. Parasitic disease (malaria, amebiasis, leishmaniosis). Skin infections and manifestations. Bone and joint infection. Sexual Transmitted Infections. Infectious disease in pregnancy Antibiotic use, stewardship and infection control
Prerequisites
Requirements: The student must have performed the exams of microbiology, immunology, integrated pathology III and integrated pathology IV.

Exam mode
Evaluation methods: The exam will start with a clinical problem to be analyzed with diagnostic aspects. Differential diagnosis will be requested. Different topics will be requested in term of epidemiological, pathogenetic and clinical aspects.
Lesson mode
Teaching methods: The teaching shall consist of lectures and interactive classes, discussion of clinical cases and practical activities in the ward.
