Course program
Management of the complex patient within the Internal Medicine area (5 CFU as organized and managed by the tutor)
Prerequisites
Successful completion of the propeadeutic courses as per decree of the Faculty, i.e., all the exams of the IV year.
Frequency
Attendance for 100 hrs during TPVES (mandatory)
Exam mode
The constant supervision by the tutor, and the discussion of selected clinical cases will allow to assess that the following skills have been achieved:
The student is able to put into practice the principles of the patient-doctor relationship (medical interview, contact, information, clarity, acquisition of consent)
The student is capable to obtain medical history and perform a physical examination in the outpatient context
The student has knowledge and capacity to apply the clinical reasoning: to distinguish between primary urgent complaints and secondary problems; to suggest a diagnostic hypothesis and to individualise the diagnostic methods of greater specificity and sensitivity to confirm or reject the hypothesis
The student is skilled to interpret the laboratory exams
The student is skilled to interpret the medical reports of the diagnostic imaging examinations
The student is oriented in decision-making regarding the pharmacological treatment
The student is able to compile the report of hospital admission/discharge and to write a discharge letter
The student is able to judge the appropriateness of the hospital discharge and to suggest the rehabilitation solutions or recovery in other facilities
The student is capable to frame the reason of hospitalisation taking into account possible chronic illnesses, further critical conditions and patient’s frailty
The student is able to demonstrate the skills of prevention and sanitary education
The student demonstrates the knowledge and awareness of the National Healthcare System and Local Healthcare System
The student respects the shift schedule, wears appropriate clothes and is well-equipped
The student shows knowledge and awareness of the department (or clinic)
The student interacts in an appropriate manner with the medical personnel, nurses and the department technicians
The student demonstrates the awareness and knowledge of the different roles of the medical team members
The student demonstrates active attitude (makes questions, candidates to perform activities)

Lesson mode
The Student is assigned cases or medical records from which he/she should abe able to discuss the diagnostic-therapeutic course with the tutor. In addition, the student will interact with patients under the supervision of the tutor, who will check the clinical competence and communication skills acquired during the first 4 years of course attendance.

Exam mode
Constant supervision by the tutor and discussion of selected clinical cases will allow for the assessment of the following competencies:
The student is able to apply the principles of the doctor–patient relationship in practice (medical interview, physical and emotional contact, information delivery, clarity, and obtaining informed consent).
The student is capable of obtaining a patient history and performing a physical examination in an outpatient setting.
The student demonstrates knowledge of, and the ability to apply, clinical reasoning: distinguishing between urgent primary disorders and secondary problems; formulating a diagnostic hypothesis; and identifying the most specific and sensitive diagnostic methods to confirm or refute the hypothesis.
Lesson mode
The student is assigned clinical cases or medical records and is expected to discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway with the tutor. In addition, the student will interact with patients under the supervision of the tutor, who will assess the clinical skills and communication abilities acquired during the first four years of the medical program.

Course program
As provided by the art. 3 of the Ministerial Decree 9 May 2018 n. 58, the internship:
1. is aimed at ascertaining the student's abilities relating to "know-how" and knowing "how to be" a doctor, which consists in applying biomedical and clinical knowledge to medical practice, in resolving issues of professional ethics and medical ethics, in demonstrating the ability to resolve clinical problems relating to the areas of medicine and surgery and related specialties, laboratory and instrumental diagnostics and public health; to apply the principles of effective communication;
2. involves a total of three months and is completed no earlier than the fifth year of the course and provided that all the fundamental exams relating to the first four years of the course have been satisfactorily passed, and is organized according to what is established by the administration and regulations of each course of study;
3. takes place for a number of hours corresponding to at least 5 CFU for each month (each CFU reserved for the internship must correspond to at least 20 hours of professional teaching activity and no more than 5 hours of individual study) and is divided into the following (not necessarily consecutives) timeframes: one month in the surgical area, one month in the medical area, one month in the specific field of general medicine, the latter to be carried out no earlier than the sixth year of the course, at the clinic of a general practitioner;
4. the certification of attendance and the evaluation of the internship periods take place under the direct responsibility and care of the university professor or medical director, responsible for the facility attended by the intern, and the general practitioner, who issue formal certification of attendance and express , after evaluating the results relating to the skills demonstrated, if positive, a judgment of suitability, on this booklet-diary, which is divided into a descriptive part of the activities carried out and an evaluation part of the demonstrated skills;
5. it is considered passed only if the suitability assessment is obtained for each of the three periods.
Prerequisites
In order to access the INTERNSHIP FOR THE STATE EXAM, students must have passed all the required exams in the first 4 years of the Course.

The certification of attendance and the evaluation of the internship periods take place under the direct responsibility and care of the university professor or the medical director, responsible for the facility attended by the intern, and the general practitioner, who issue formal certification of attendance and express, after having evaluated the results relating to the skills demonstrated, if positive, a judgment of suitability, in this booklet-diary, which is divided into a descriptive part of the activities carried out and an evaluation part of the skills demonstrated.
The practical-evaluative internship can also be carried out using the months in which teaching activities are not normally carried out (generally January, February, June, July, August, September) to reach the 100 certifiable hours for the purposes of the Ministerial Decree.
