The UN 2030 Agenda proposes 17 interconnected and fundamental Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for achieving sustainable development, each broken down into specific targets related to global challenges to be addressed by 2030. These Goals affect the biosphere and therefore all living things on our planet, but in particular all the activities that human society carries out within different environmental systems (natural terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, agroecosystems, urban ecosystems), including economic relations and productive activities integrated with biospheric processes that underpin human development and well-being. Within this framework, several key themes and some of the most recent and innovative research topics that contribute to the sustainable development of society from a One Health perspective will be explored. Main topics covered: Basic ecological concepts; Functional processes of the biosphere (photosynthesis and plant transpiration); Biogeochemical cycles (carbon, nitrogen, water); Global Changes (climate change, biodiversity loss, air pollution, changes in land use and cover, etc.); Monitoring environmental sustainability indicators (ONU-SDGs, ISTAT-BES); Natural Capital and Ecosystem Service provision; Urban ecosystems and the role of green spaces in cities to improve environmental quality and citizen well-being.
