CHEMICAL ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS
Course objectives
The course builds on the basic concepts of Chemistry and Physycs and is aimed to provide the students with the conceptual tools for modelling chemical and phase equilibria and chemical equilibrium problems. The students are expected to be able to analyse simple problems (low pressure) by means of equilibrium conditions obtained fron the second law of thermodynamics: in particular the students should be able to reduce the equilibrium equations to the significant terms for a specific situation, by means of the order of magnitude analysis.

Course program
Mass and energy balance in closed systems and inflow-outflow systems. First and second law of thermodynamics. Fundamental thermodynamics relationships (canonical equations, Maxwell equations, Gibbs-Helmholtz and Gibbs-Duhem equation). Equilibrium diagrams of pure species. Volumetric characterization of pure compounds (cubic equations of state). Virial approach to volumetric behavior of pure species and mixtures. Corresponding states. Chemical potential and reference states for gaseous mixtures and condensed phases. Gibbs' phase rule. Chemical equilibrium and its dependence on temperature and pressure. Vapor/liquid equilibrium of binary mixtures. Liquid-liquid equilibrium of binary mixtures (ideal case and real mixtures). Liquid/liquid/vapor equilibrium. Gas/liquid equilibrium with specific emphasis on air/water system.
Prerequisites
Multivariate calculus. Mechanics.
