CONSTRUCTION SITE TECHNIQUE AND SAFETY

Course objectives

The selection and processing of materials for road construction with special attention to organizational and operational aspects of modern construction techniques, with application exercises. Students are guided to critical examination of various operational conditions through an extensive use of original technical movies.Advanced knowledge of building roads technology and safety issues through multimedial tours of worksites.

The organization of the site: planning of the works, Gantt chart, Critical path method and Program Evaluation Review Technique 6. Quarries 7. Types of crushers: primary, secondary, and tertiary crushers, filler crushers 8. Mobile crushers 9. Control of materials and construction procedures: contract specification, CE marking 10. Production plants: aggregates and hot mix asphalt 11. Laying of flexible and rigid pavements 12. Urban works 13. Construction of rigid pavements 14. Safety of construction sites: standards, involved figures, responsibility 15. Construction and safety planning documents (PSC, POS, PIMUS) 16. Safety costs at the construction site 17. Safety of work sites with traffic 18. Life cycle analysis, minimum environmental criteria, environmental product declaration
Prerequisites
Knowledge of road design and construction; road materials.

The assessment is accomplished on the exercises (in itinere) presented by the student, a written exam, and on an oral interview (discussion about a roadwork site).
