International experiences
Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad: in Europe and outside Europe, for short stays or longer periods, thesis work abroad, and much more.
Study Periods in European Countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions. It funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all disciplines and at all levels of study (including PhD programs) and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
The Erasmus+ program allows students to attend courses and take exams with full recognition in their academic curriculum, or to conduct research for the preparation of their Master’s or PhD thesis.

Internships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ mobility for traineeships allows students to undertake internships at companies, training centers, and research institutions located in one of the participating countries.
The program enables students to carry out full-time internships abroad, recognized as an integral part of their study program. The traineeship may also be undertaken after graduation, provided that the selection takes place before obtaining the degree. The number of mobility months is added to those of Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum provided by the program.

European Alliance CIVIS – “A European Civic University”
Sapienza is a partner in the European Alliance CIVIS – “A European Civic University”, funded by the European Union and established together with the following universities:
Free University of Brussels
University of Tübingen
Autonomous University of Madrid
Aix-Marseille Université
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
University of Bucharest
Stockholm University
University of Glasgow
Paris Lodron University of Salzburg
Université de Lausanne
The alliance has launched a variety of joint study programs across its 11 European campuses to create a true European Higher Education Area and contribute to the development of a strong, multilingual European knowledge society.
Education is research-based and built upon innovative teaching activities, including not only traditional Erasmus mobility but also short-term, virtual, and distance mobility opportunities.

Study Periods in Non-EU Countries: Overseas Program
Thanks to funding from the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own contributions, each year Sapienza offers students the opportunity to spend a study period abroad—either to take exams or conduct thesis research—at one of over 200 non-EU institutions with which bilateral agreements are in place.
The Overseas mobility program provides a monthly grant of €700 net per month for the first 5 months and €500 net per month starting from the 6th month.
The continuous stay abroad must last at least 90 days and may extend up to a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The grant may be awarded only once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza contributions.

Study or Research Periods in Non-EU Countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM program, funded by the European Commission, enables students and faculty members to spend a period abroad for study, thesis research, teaching, or training in non-EU countries. The program provides a scholarship and travel expense coverage.
All activities carried out abroad are recognized upon return by the relevant Sapienza academic staff, as established in the Learning Agreement.
Student mobility may last from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 6 months (extendable up to 12 months, with the last 6 months without scholarship under the Zero-EU Grant scheme). The ICM scholarship also covers doctoral research mobility for the same duration.
Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the home university city and the host university city.

Scholarships for Thesis Work Abroad
Thesis abroad scholarships are available to students regularly enrolled at least in the first year of a Master’s degree program, or in the penultimate or final year of a single-cycle Master’s degree program, who wish to conduct part of their thesis preparation abroad at foreign or EU institutions, organizations, companies, or at supranational or international institutions of adequate scientific and cultural standing.
The thesis work abroad must last at least two continuous months.
The scholarship amounts to €2,821.00 gross (including IRAP).
Scholarships are awarded through a competitive call managed by the faculties.

Postgraduate Scholarships for Advanced Training Abroad
Scholarships for advanced training abroad allow graduates to attend courses or undertake advanced training activities at foreign or international university-level institutions.
These scholarships are awarded annually and have a minimum duration of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months. The monthly amount is €1,290, tax-exempt (IRPEF exempt).
They are reserved for graduates who obtained a Master’s degree (or equivalent single-cycle degree) from Sapienza by the last available session of the academic year preceding the call and who are not over 29 years of age.

Degree Program Activities
At the Latina campus there is a dedicated Erasmus Office. For engineering programs, approximately 30 mobility agreements have been established. Each year, an informational event is organized for students.
Outgoing students are supported both by the campus offices and by the central university offices, including assistance at the host institution.
Some agreements provide for thesis work abroad and teaching mobility for faculty members. In recent years, the campus has also hosted staff from foreign universities for exchanges of best practices.
The curricular internship is an important component of the learning and training process and is not directly aimed at employment placement.
Students may undertake a curricular internship during their studies to acquire the University Educational Credits (CFU) required by the study plan.
The curricular internship must be completed before graduation.
Internships carried out mainly in external organizations, which are instrumental or connected to the final examination, are also considered curricular internships.
An expense reimbursement may be provided.
