International experiences
Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad: within Europe and beyond, for short stays or longer periods, thesis research abroad, and much more.
Study Periods in European Countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions; it funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all disciplines and levels of study (including doctoral programs) and facilitates academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
The Erasmus+ program allows students to attend courses and pass exams, with full recognition in their academic transcript, or to conduct research in preparation for their master’s or doctoral thesis.

Internships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ mobility for traineeships allows students to undertake internships in companies, training centers, and research institutions located in participating countries. The program enables full-time internships abroad that are recognized as an integral part of the student’s academic program.
The internship may also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection process takes place before obtaining the degree. The number of months spent in mobility adds to those of Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum allowed by the program.

Study Periods in Non-EU Countries: Overseas Program
Thanks to funding from the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and its own contributions, Sapienza offers each year the opportunity to spend a study period abroad—either to take exams or to conduct thesis research—at one of over 200 non-EU institutions with which bilateral agreements are in place.
The Overseas mobility program provides a monthly grant of €700 net for the first 5 months and €500 net from the 6th month onward.
The period abroad must be continuous and last at least 90 days, up to a maximum of two consecutive semesters.
The grant may be awarded only once per degree cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza funding.

Study or Research in Non-EU Countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM program, funded by the European Commission, allows students and staff to spend a study/research period abroad (for thesis work, teaching, or training) in non-EU countries. The program provides a scholarship and covers travel expenses.
All activities completed abroad are recognized upon return to Sapienza, as established in the Learning Agreement.
Student mobility may last from 3 to 6 months (extendable up to 12 months, with the last 6 months under the “Zero-EU Grant” scheme). The ICM grant also covers PhD-level research mobility for the same duration.
Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the home and host universities.

Program Activities (CdS)
The Master’s Degree in Telecommunication Engineering currently has two active agreements for the award of a double master’s degree:
- Agreement with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA)
for a double Master’s Degree / Master of Science.
The double degree path lasts two academic years, with the following standard plan:- First year at Sapienza
- Second year divided between Georgia Tech’s Atlanta campus (Georgia, USA) and Georgia Tech Lorraine campus (Metz, France).
- Agreement with the Grande École CentraleSupélec (France)
for a double Master’s Degree / Master of Science.
The double degree path lasts three academic years, with the following standard plan:- First year at Sapienza
- Second and third years at one of the campuses in Paris-Saclay, Rennes, or Metz.
Students may also, with authorization from the Degree Program Council (CAD), spend a study period abroad through the Erasmus program. In accordance with university regulations, the CAD evaluates each case individually for credit recognition in the relevant academic fields.
The master’s thesis may also be carried out at a foreign institution, provided that the student has an internal supervisor from the Telecommunications Engineering CAD.
Faculty members in the Telecommunications Engineering program maintain numerous scientific collaborations with international universities and research institutes, allowing students to easily identify suitable host institutions for their thesis work.
The Telecommunications Engineering CAD supports students through:
- Meetings with the RAM (Academic Coordinator for International Mobility) to define and approve the Learning Agreement;
- Guidance from tutor professors and faculty mentors to design appropriate study plans;
- Dedicated meetings for the presentation of mobility initiatives.
