Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of ANCIENT TOPOGRAPHY AND CARTOGRAPHY with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. Methodological and functional basics for reading technical and thematic cartography concerning rural and urban maps at different scale. Knowing about historical cartography.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
General characteristics and objectives of topographical research: history of the discipline; research direction and scientific methodology, purpose, sources and tools (literary, epigraphic, cartographic and itinerant sources). The issue of the archaeological map will be dealt with in a broad manner, with specific interest for territorial surveys, use of aerial photography and satellite and proximity remote sensing. The geophysical methods applicable in the archaeological field will also be examined. With the aim of highlighting the multidisciplinary aspect of topographic research, GIS systems and databases will be considered.
Prerequisites
Basic notions and knowledge of history and archaeology.
Books
The bibliography will be indicated during the lessons.
Teaching mode
The course will take place with lectures. Seminar activities are also planned in which each student will analyze a specific case study using the methodology of the discipline.

Exam mode
The evaluation test consist of an oral interview lasting about 25 minutes, during which the topics covered in the lessons will be discussed, appropriately deepened on the recommended texts. The oral exam will test the knowledge of the discipline and the understanding and argumentation skills of the student.
