Course objectives

The students will acquire high level knowledge in Spanish Literature, paying attention to the latest developments in the disciplinary debate and bibliography. The students will be able to collect data for a critical judgment, even in the ethical-social dimension underpinning the discipline. The students will therefore be able to use their knowledge in critical thinking, in addressing open issues, in implementing methods of study and research. The students will manage to communicate the results of their work both to specialists and to a broader audience. Finally, the students will be provided with the necessary skills to successfully undertake a future degree that includes Spanish Literature.

Course program
In this module we intend to offer a commented reading of some masterpieces of Spanish literature from the Middle Ages to the sixteenth century. Specifically, the following topics will be addressed: 1. Mozarabic poetry and jarchas. 2. Traditional opera: villancicos and cantigas de amigo 3. The mester de juglaría, the epic and the Cantar de mío Cid. 4. The mester de clerecía: Los milagros de Nuestra Señora by Gonzalo de Berceo and El libro del buen amor del Arcipresti de Hita. 5. La Celestina 6. Cavalry books: the Amadís de Gaula 7. The Lazarillo de Tormes

Literary history: Alberto Varvaro and Carmelo Samonà, Spanish literature from the Cid to the Catholic Kings, Sansoni Accademia or BUR, Rizzoli (the book can be used, in any case the photocopies will be left in the Mirafiori Photocopier, basement Faculty Letters). 2. Elisabetta Sarmati, Spanish literature from its origins to the 14th century. Analysis of medieval texts, Rome, Aracne, 2008. 3. Fernando de Rojas, La Celestina, Madrid, Cátedra, (for students of modern literature see Italian translation BUR, Rizzoli, however, other commercial translations are also allowed. 4. Anonymous, Lazarillo de Tormes, Venice, Marsilio (Italian translation by Antonio Gargano with opposite text) - 5. Lecture notes to be purchased from the photocopy shop Mirafiori, Faculty basement, where the following essay is present: a) C. Samonà, Il Lazarillo de Tormes, in C. Samonà, G. Mancini, F. Guazzelli, A. Martinengo, Spanish literature of the golden ages, Rizzoli, BUR, Milan, pp. 155-185. 6. History and geography of Spain: under Spain in the Treccani online encyclopedia: www.treccani.it/encpedia/spagna. History up to Charles V included.
Teaching mode
In the present, the course will take place according to the lectures of both a general and textual analysis.
Frequency
Attendance is free. Student participation in reading and commentary activities is appreciated.
Exam mode
For attending students, the exam provides for an exemption from the program carried out in class which will be assessed as 50% of the final result. The remaining 50% of the mark will be attributed to the oral exam on Alberto Varvaro and Carmelo Samonà, Spanish literature from the Cid to the Catholic Kings, Sansoni Accademia or BUR, Rizzoli (the book can be used in the used, in any case the photocopies will be left in the Mirafiori Photocopy shop, in the basement of the Faculty of Letters), on the Lecture notes and on the point. 6. However, an insufficient assessment acquired in the exemption does not allow for an oral exam. In addition to the knowledge of the contents made explicit in the program, metric-rhetorical skills will be appreciated for the analysis of the texts being read, according to the "comentario de texto" method as done in class. The non-attending student will bring the same program as the non-attending student, but must go to the professor's reception one month before the appeal in which he intends to present himself.
