HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Course objectives

The students will acquire high level knowledge and ability to interpret events in the field of History of Contemporary Art, paying attention to the latest developments in the disciplinary debate and bibliography. The students will be able to collect and interpret the data on which to base a judgment that is critically aware, even in the ethical-social dimension underpinning the discipline. The students will therefore be able to use their knowledge in critical thinking, in addressing open issues, in implementing methods of study and research. The students will manage to communicate the results of his work both to specialists and to a broader audience. Finally, the students will be provided with the necessary skills to successfully undertake a future degree course that includes History of Contemporary Art. More specifically, the course aims to offer students tools for historical-critical analysis of art of the nineteenth and twentieth century - with views to the 21st century - through a theme-based and chronological cut that makes students able to orient themselves in the sources and in the bibliography, in order to develop - in time – personals capacity in interpretation and connection between works and historical-artistic events.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course focuses on Futurism. The development of the Italian avant-garde movement (1909-1944) will be analyzed within the international background. Manifestoes and programmatic texts will be interpreted next to the visual practices through the more recent critical acquisitions. The exam will verify the learning of the subject and the acquisition of the methodological and critical tools necessary to understand the topics of the course.
Prerequisites
General knowledge of art history from the 19th century to the present.
Books
Handouts for attending and nonattending students will be listed at the beginning of the course and uploaded to Moodle Sapienza
Frequency
Attendance is optional. Non-attending students will supplement the program with additional bibliography
Exam mode
Attending students: oral exam (75%); project (25%). Non-attending students: oral exam (100%).. The project, focused on the study of themes and critical issues related to Futurism, will be presented in class at the end of the course and must be submitted via Classroom (in PowerPoint and Word format).
