Advanced Italian Grammar
Course objectives
The students will acquire high level knowledge and interpretation skills in the field of Italian Grammar, paying attention to the latest developments in the disciplinary debate and bibliography. The students will be able to collect and interpret data on which to base a judgment that is critically aware, even in the ethical-social dimension underpinning the discipline. The students will therefore be able to use their knowledge in critical thinking, in addressing open issues, in implementing methods of study and research. The students will manage to communicate the results of their work both to specialists and to a broader audience. Finally, the students will be provided with the necessary skills to successfully undertake a future degree course that includes exams in Italian Linguistic.

Course program
The course will focus on the grammatical structures of contemporary Italian, explained with the analytical tools currently used in the synchronic study of languages.
In the first part (lessons 1-16), the main characteristics of the various levels of linguistic analysis will be described; in the second (lessons 17-21), on one hand we will discuss specific morphology, (morpho-)syntax and pragmatic issues, on the other we will investigate some recent innovations of the system.
IMPORTANT: Students who have already taken the exam in Issues in the History of the Italian Language must contact the professor and agree on a personalised programme for non-attending students.
Prerequisites
The course is addressed to 2nd 3rd year students. A good knowledge of the notions taught in the first-year module '“Istituzioni di storia della lingua italiana”' is required.

1) Attend the course and study only the content presented in the classroom in the first 16 lectures;
2) Study the following handbook:

NB: the contents of chapters I-VIII will be explained - for the most part - in the introductory section of the course (lecture 1-16); students are advised to attend it.
Frequency
Attending classes, while not compulsory, is recommended.
Exam mode
The exam consists of an oral exam of approximately 30 minutes.

The course will be held in the second semester and will take place weekly.The calendar will be published in February on the professor's page (https://corsidilaurea.uniroma1.it/it/users/vincenzofaraoniuniroma1it; "Notizie" section).
