Course objectives

General aims: Course in Bengali language, basic user (CEFR A2-B1); elements of Bengali culture. Specific aims: At the end of the course students are able to – 1) understand sentences and frequently used expressions and key expressions on familiar themes like school and leisure; 2) communicate in simple and routine tasks and during travels; 3) compose simple text on themes of daily relevance; 4) read simple and medium texts; 5) illustrate the cultural context to written texts and Bengali authors.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
Introduction to the history of Bengal culture in the modern and contemporary age. Attending students: reading of texts, listening to songs, projection of videos illustrating salient aspects of the cultural tradition in Bengali and its contemporary implications. The materials will be indicated and distributed in class. Non-attending students: individual study of exam texts.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to have a basic understanding of South Asian cultural history.
Books
Attending students: materials and notes taken in class. Non-attending students: Richard M. Eaton, The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier, 1204–1760, University of California Press, 1993 (or later ed.).
Frequency
Not mandatory but strongly recommended.
Exam mode
Oral exaimnation.
