Course objectives

General aims: Course in Bengali language, basic user (CEFR A1-A2). Specific aims: At the end of the course students are able to – 1) understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment); 2) communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters; 3) describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need; 4) catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements and understand short simple personal letters.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
General framework: Elementary Bengali language, levels A1-A2. Teaching structure (the number of hours for each topic will depend on the response from the class): 1) linguistic profile of Bengali language; 2) Bengali script (vowels, consonants, conjuncts); 3) morphology and syntaxis (determinative suffixes; determinative pronouns and adjectives; personal and interrogative pronouns; structure of sentences; Nominative, Genitive, Dative/Accusative and Locative cases; numerals, vowel gradation of verbal roots; verbal noun; present tense; present coninuous tense; future tense; infinitive; past tenses; expanded and causative verbs); 4) oral exercises (pronunciation; vocabulary; sentences of daily use).
Prerequisites
Familiarity with basic concepts of grammar.

Teaching mode
Classroom teaching including audiovisual materials (specific aims 1, 4); classroom exercises, linguistic laboratory (specific aims 2, 3).
Frequency
Attendance is strongly recommended, but not compulsory.
Exam mode
Two written tests relating to latest topics dealt with (specific aims 1-2, 4). Final oral examination with marks up to 30/30 (specific aims 1-4). Marks are given based on: - ability to understand oral and written texts; - ability to produce correct expressions orally and in writing; - ability to apply grammar rules. Attaining the above abilities fully will result in excellent marks. Attaining the above qualities partially will result in medium to good marks. Failure in some of the abilities will result in only sufficient marks. Failure in most or all the above abilities will result in negative marks.
