Course objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Course program
The programme, aimed at students of the degree courses in Historical-Artistic Studies and History, Anthropology and Religions, offers the acquisition of philological skills in relation to three specific areas: a) the concepts of “author”, “text”, “true”, “false”, “authentic”, “apocryphal”; b) Marc Bloch's “Apologia of History”, excerpts of which will be read in class and studied as a philological problem; c) the relationship between text and image, with reference to examples taken from medieval narrative cycles and their artistic representations. in order to pass the exam, students must have studied: 1) Alberto Varvaro, Prima lezione di filologia, Laterza, Rome-Bari 2012 (2023); 2) Marc Bloch, Apologia della storia, Italian translation, Einaudi, Turin, 2009 (including the Preface and Introduction, which are useful for an introduction to the philological problem represented by the text); 3) M. Mastrogregori, Introduzione a Bloch, Editori Laterza, Bari-Rome 2001; 4) chapters III and IV of M. L. Meneghetti, Storie al muro. Temi e personaggi della letteratura profana nell'arte occidentale, Einaudi, Turin 2015 (the chapters will be made available on the platform).
