ADVANCED EXPERIMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY IA

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of ADVANCED EXPERIMENTAL ARCHEOLOGY IA, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. The course is aimed to present the methodology of the experimental archaeology, its development and spread in the academy, the connections between the experimental archaeology and the other archaeological disciplines. Moreover, a key point of the course is to explain what an “experimental protocol” means and how to apply it for the interpretation of the archaeological relics.

Course program
Designing the Sensoriality of the Past through Experimental Archaeology The focus of the course is the sensorial dissemination of archaeological data through experimental archaeology. Very often fragments of objects or remains of structures are the only archaeological evidences, difficult to understand by a non-expert public. The virtual reconstruction of these remains is extremely important to increase understanding, while allowing those who use them to experience only visual and, to a lesser extent, auditory sensations. Experimental archaeology, in its educational aspect, allows a complete sensorial interaction between the subject and the reproduced activity/object, becoming a powerful educational and social integration tool. During the course, students will be given the theoretical tools to develop an experimental protocol based on scientific data. Each experimental protocol will be associated with an educational project to be carried out in a museum with various types of audience.
