Educational objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Mediolatin Literature, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course focuses on specific aspects of medieval and humanistic Latin literature (authors, genres, themes, etc.) to provide students with knowledge and understanding which extend and strengthen the skills acquired in the first cycle. Students will be able to make a critical reading of the literary works, to interpret them in the light of the most modern critical and methodological acquisitions, to read the medieval Latin texts in their original language, analyzed from a philological, linguistic, stylistic and historical-literary point of view. A further objective is to develop awareness of the value of the Latin medieval culture - the synthesis of classical, christian and germanic / celtic cultures - as the true foundation of modern European culture.

In particular, students will acquire advanced skills to use critical and methodological tools related to specific aspects of the history of the Byzantine civilization and of the medieval Greek language. Students will be able to read literary texts of the Byzantine era (starting from philological, linguistic, stylistic, historical and literary point of view) from a critical perspective and interpret them through modern methodology related to scientific discussion.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with basic knowledges and methodological competences for the research in the field of the Latin epigraphy and the Roman antiquities.

In particular, students are expected to acquire: (a) the basic technical and methodological tools necessary to study the Greek papyri, both literary and documentary; (b) a basic knowledge of the development of the Greek script from the fourth century B.C to the eighth century A.D.; (c) an ability to express their own distinctive scholarly voices on individual documents, as well as on select problems of historical and philological character; and (d) a good knowledge of the instrumenta studiorum of the discipline.

Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the didactical goal of the archaeological section of the course is represented by the study of Minoan and Mycenaean civilization, in the wider context of the Mediterranean area, from the islands (Cyprus, Cyclades) to Anatolia (Hittite empire), and from Syrian and Palestinian coasts to the Egypt and to the far routes to Italic coasts; the didactical goal of the philological section of the course is the philological interpretation and study of the Greek Mycenaean texts (II mill. a.C.).

1. The student has to demonstrate that he has acquired knowledge and ability to understand that reinforce those acquired during the first cycle of the training course and that allow to elaborate original ideas in the field of text criticism.
2. The student has to show to be able to solve new problems in the field of textual criticism with reference to interdisciplinary contexts.
3. The student must be able to integrate the acquired knowledge and manage the complexity of the scientific problems related to the method of restitution of the text, to know how to formulate independent judgments with attention to the social issues related to the critical edition of a text.
4. The student has to know how to communicate the acquired information and explain the procedures that have enabled their acquisition so that they can be understood in the specialist and non-specialist fields.
5. The student must prove that he knows how to study independently in the field of philology and textual criticism of Italian literature.

Educational objectives

The course in Historical linguistics for MA aims at elaborating at a deeper level the linguistic knowledge already acquired by the students during their BA course. Particularly,the general skills in theoretical
linguistics will be applied to specific natural languages, with a particular regard towards extra-European languages. This course deals with the phenomenon of linguistics contact, discussing the main effects it may produce with respect to linguistic change, not only at lexical level, but, most importantly, at more structured levels as morphology, syntax and phonology. As for the consequences of the linguistic contact, the relationship between universal drifts and specific historical and sociological biases will be carefully examined.

In particular, the course aims at introducing students to the understanding of the history of the object currency, in its progress in the different cultures of the ancient Mediterranean.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with notions about urban development process in historical cities, that is basic elements on: 1. the inspiring principles in colonial planning in distinct historical periods; 2. architectural components in urban framing; 3. technical processing work from the urban project to the accomplished plan, to now-a-days situation through the post-roman alterations. The course also analyses geopolitical context referring to particularly interesting archaeological environments (from Mediterranean basin to Central America).

The course of geography teaching, addressing the main issues concerning the learning / teaching processes of geography, highlights the relationships between research and disciplinary teaching and identifies teaching methodologies and tools able to promote in students an appropriate use of vocabulary and categories interpretations of the discipline in order to be able to understand and contextualise the environmental and anthropological characteristics of the territory.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with knowledge of Hebrew language aimed at the reading of texts, and notions of Hebrew literature.

The course aims to provide students with the linguistic knowledge to deal with Armenian texts of medium difficulty, directing them to the understanding of the main historical and literary dynamics that characterized ancient Armenian culture. Students will be able to exercise the knowledge and understanding acquired in order to analyze texts and historical contexts that are new, although connected with those they have already encountered in their field of study. This way, the students will be able to take note of the more complex articulation of the ancient world and to refine their ability to reflect on this complexity and evaluate it. Students will be guided to express and communicate these reflections and evaluations in a clear and understandable way. The aim of the course is to develop in students the learning skills necessary to continue and deepen the study independently.

The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the discipline, with particular regard to the material characters of manuscript witnesses, the figures of both copyists and readers, and the role that all these aspects played in the history of Greek texts, whose preservation and loss from Antiquity to the Humanism will also be focused. The course also proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with an overview of the history and civilization of the Etruscans, with particular reference to the relationship between archaeological data - material culture, art and crafts - and the valuable information derived from Greek and Latin sources, since we do not have any Etruscan literary text.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with consolidated tools for the archaeological analysis: students will study some archaeological complexes that are very relevant to the reconstruction of the Medieval society, and will be introduced to the knowledge of the most important themes in the most updated archaeological research in Italy and in Europe.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with an overview of the history and civilization of the Etruscans, with particular reference to the relationship between archaeological data - material culture, art and crafts - and the valuable information derived from Greek and Latin sources, since we do not have any Etruscan literary text.

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Mediolatin Literature, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course focuses on specific aspects of medieval and humanistic Latin literature (authors, genres, themes, etc.) to provide students with knowledge and understanding which extend and strengthen the skills acquired in the first cycle. Students will be able to make a critical reading of the literary works, to interpret them in the light of the most modern critical and methodological acquisitions, to read the medieval Latin texts in their original language, analyzed from a philological, linguistic, stylistic and historical-literary point of view. A further objective is to develop awareness of the value of the Latin medieval culture - the synthesis of classical, christian and germanic / celtic cultures - as the true foundation of modern European culture.

Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, students will acquire advanced skills to use critical and methodological tools related to specific aspects of the history of the Byzantine civilization and of the medieval Greek language. Students will be able to read literary texts of the Byzantine era (starting from philological, linguistic, stylistic, historical and literary point of view) from a critical perspective and interpret them through modern methodology related to scientific discussion.

Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with the tools to assess the contribution of epigraphic studies to historical issues of ancient Greece.

Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at: analizing historical events by reading documents both published and unpublished; making students know the scholars’ bibliography and the changes of historical perspectives about the lessons’ subject; working out students’ critical ability towards history and its development; teaching the students how to compare different kinds of documents in order to take into consideration and to use the different points of view; understanding how to place a particular event inside the wider and more general historical frame.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with competence on the basic tools for research in the field of Latin epigraphy and Roman institutions and knowledge of the main fields of research with deepening of methodological skills.
