Course objectives

The course - provides the student with knowledge and understanding of the methodological and critical-problematic aspects of the Discipline as well as application issues; proposes area and sectoral perspectives in which research projects relating to the Discipline are active or can be activated; shows the variability of the fields of interest within which disciplinary skills can be applied (descriptor 1); - develops the student's autonomous ability to relate what has been learned with other SSDs: historical, literary, artistic, cultural, economic, political, historical-religious disciplines, etc. (descriptor 2); - enables the student to use the acquired knowledge and the specific learned language in view of the so-called "transversal skills" (autonomy of judgment, communication skills, descriptors 3-5).

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course aims to explain the fundamental concepts of general linguistics: properties of natural languages and general principles of their analysis; articulatory phonetic and phonology; morphology, syntax, and semantics; overview of the main methods of language classification; linguistic change and variation (36 hours). The exercises carried out during the course will consist of an in-depth analysis of some selected phenomena, paying particular attention to the phonetic/phonological transcription (6 hours).

None.

For both attending and non attending students: G. Berruto and M. Cerruti, 'La linguistica. Un corso introduttivo', UTET/De Agostini, Novara, Third Edition, 2022 (excluding chapter 8).
Teaching mode
Students from A to L. 36 lesson hours and 6 hours of exercises in classroom. First semester of the 2022/2023 academic year.
Frequency
Regular attendance is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
Students can choose between two assessment methods: a) a written test (around 30 minutes) consisting of 32 multiple-choice questions at the end of the course; b) an oral exam in the scheduled appeals. Both kinds of exam concern the whole program of the course and are structured in such a way as to verify what follows: if the student have understood the topics covered during the course, demonstrate to possess basic knowledge (as far as both the content and the specific linguistic expression are concerned), are able to apply abilities of analysis and reflection concerning the main areas of linguistics, as well as the suitable techniques and methods to the field.
