Course program
Course objectives This course introduces the fundamental principles of hygiene and public health with a specific focus on dental public health. Students will acquire knowledge of the determinants of health and disease, epidemiological methods, preventive strategies, and organizational aspects of healthcare systems, with particular attention to vulnerable populations. Course Topics 1st semester Introduction to hygiene, public health, and dental public health Concepts of health, disease, and risk Levels of prevention: primary, secondary, tertiary Determinants of health and disease Review of epidemiology: measures of frequency and association, epidemiological studies Health and disease indicators Primary prevention of infectious and non-communicable diseases Vaccines (history, active and passive prophylaxis, vaccination calendars, vaccine hesitancy) Sanitization, disinfection sterilization Water hygiene Secondary prevention: oncological screening programmes, reliability of screening tests and accuracy of tests in general, ROC curves
