THREE-DIMENSIONAL MODELING

Course objectives

The Pathological Anatomy course is annual and organized in two consecutive semesters (first semester: Pathological Anatomy IS; second semester: Pathological Anatomy IIS). At the end of the course the student must be aware of the main anatomical-pathological aspects of the diseases, with particular reference to those pertaining to dentistry and maxillofacial, and of the etiological and pathogenetic mechanisms underlying their development and their clinical presentation. At the end of the course the student will have to, by applying the knowledge acquired with this teaching, be able to establish the role of pathological anatomy in the correct classification of a disease, when and how to request a histological examination and how to interpret the result, to understand the clinical implications of an anatomical-pathological diagnosis, and therefore to correlate the anatomical-pathological aspects with specific clinical pictures in order to formulate a prognosis and develop a specific therapeutic strategy.

Course program
Pathological Anatomy as medical science. The laboratory of Pathological Anatomy. Diagnostic paths and methodologies in Pathological Anatomy. Embryogenesis and macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the oral cavity. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology of the oral cavity: white lesions blue-red lesions; pigmented lesions; vesiculobullous lesions; verrucous-papillary lesions; ulcerative lesions. Oral carcinoma: carcinogenesis and risk factors, prevention, early diagnosis and clinical and pathological features. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology of the major and minor salivary glands. Odontogenic tumors. Non-odontogenic tumors, cysts and inflammatory pathology of gnathic bones. Metabolic and genetic disorders with involvement of the oro-cranio-facial district. Systemic pathology: pathology of the cardiovascular system (with particular reference to arteriosclerosis and myocardial infarction); pathology of the respiratory system (with particular reference to infectious and vascular diseases, restrictive and obstructive disease and neoplastic pathologies); pathology of the digestive system (with particular reference to neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and associated glands); pathology of the skeleton (neoplastic and non-neoplastic); pathology of hemolymphopoietic tissue (with particular reference to anemias, leukemias, chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes and lymphomas). The teaching program will be carried out with the presentation of numerous clinical cases both in the field of pathology of the oral and cranio-facial district and of pathologies affecting other organs and systems with implications in dentistry. No more than 6 hours, at the beginning of the first semester, will be dedicated to the general aspects of the subject. The rest of the course will be dedicated to discussing the specific topics of the program.
Prerequisites
In order to understand properly the teaching content and to achieve the learning objectives, at the beginning of the teaching activities the student must possess adequate knowledge of normal Anatomy and Histology, Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Physiology and General Pathology. Cultural prerequisites: see https://corsidilaurea.uniroma1.it/it/corso/2017/odontoiatria-e-protesi-dentaria/insegnamenti/pages/85334 [Regulations of the Dental School (according to art. 3 of the D. M. 270/04)].
Books
Robbins Basic Pathology. Kumar V, Abbas AK, Aster J. Elsevier, 10th Edition, 2017. Oral Pathology. Clinical Pathologic Correlations. Regezi J, Sciubba J, Jordan R. Saunders, 7th Edition, 2017.
Frequency
According to paragraph 4.5 of the Regulations of the Dental School (https://corsidilaurea.uniroma1.it/it/corso/2016/odontoiatria-e-protesi-dentaria/insegnamenti/pages/85334), the student is required to attend educational activities, formal, non-formal, vocational. The frequency is checked by the teachers through signature / updated lists provided by the Academic Office, as established by CCLMOPD. The certificate of mandatory attendance to the teaching course is required to the student to be admitted at the final test.
Exam mode
The assessment is comprehensive, includes questions related to the pathology of the oral and cranio-facial district and other organs and systems and takes into account: a) knowledge of the topics covered by the questions; b) adequacy of the answer to each of the questions in relation to the skills that are assumed to have been acquired at the end of the course; c) logic followed to answer the questions; d) use of an appropriate language.
Bibliography
Scientific articles related to topics included in the program will be recommended for integrative purposes to frontal lessons and adopted texts.
Lesson mode
The teaching is done in two consecutive semesters (first semester: Pathologic Anatomy IS; second semester; Pathologic Anatomy IIS) and is essentially based on frontal lessons characterized by a strong interactive component between teachers and students. Other teaching methods may include the observation of either autopsies or histological slides or both.
