ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY

Course objectives

General objectives - Main objective of the course is to allow the student to acquire advanced knowledge of environmental microbiology including the most modern molecular techniques and methodologies, for the study of microbial diversity and its effects in different natural environments. In particular, in this module we will examine the different components of the microbial cell, and their role in mediating the interactions with the environment also for evolutionary purposes. We will also study the microbial diversity in relation to their environments.

Course program
In this module the main microbial components of natural and anthropized, terrestrial and aquatic environments are considered. In particular, the different interactions that the microorganisms establish with the abiotic (biofilm) and biotic environments (eg microorganisms / animal organisms) and the molecular mechanisms underlying them will be studied. The mobile elements, plasmids, transposons, and their molecular mechanisms of diffusion and propagation in microbial populations / communities are studied. The functions that microbial genetic elements play and the role in environmental remodeling and evolutionary processes. Furthermore, the most advanced molecular analysis techniques will be studied with particular reference to soil and water microbiology
Prerequisites
Prerequisites: Knowledge of general microbiology and molecular biology is required, deriving from the knowledge acquired in three-year degree courses, such as Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Environmental Sciences

Frequency
Attendance is essential for thematic seminars and presentations organized by students.
Exam mode
The ongoing assessment consists of a reverse lesson on a program topic to be presented to the class. The exam has the objective of verifying the level of knowledge and in-depth analysis of the topics of the teaching program, the reasoning skills acquired and the presentation skills. The evaluation is expressed out of thirty (minimum mark 18/30, maximum mark 30/30 with honors). The evaluation consists of an oral test consisting in the discussion of an article chosen by the candidate but approved by the teacher. Both the mark obtained in the oral test which is aimed at verifying the knowledge of the topics covered in the course and the mark of the reverse lesson made by the student during personal presentations in class contribute to the final grade. To achieve the score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of the topics covered in the course and an excellent ability to explain specific and advanced topics in a clear and competent way.
Lesson mode
The educational path includes lectures and seminar lessons to deepen specific topics. There are also educational workshops on specific molecular environmental microbiology investigation techniques, which allow the student to experimentally implement some investigated methods of investigation and to apply the experimental data evaluation methods.
