Course objectives

The course aims to provide a thorough understanding of the origins, transformations and role of the masses in the development of political and social life. The advent of the s. of m. it is usually dated between the end of the 19th century. and the beginning of the 20th century and has characterized the entire twentieth century. Population growth, mass urbanization, the spread of education, the extension of the right to vote have completed the picture, favoring a more conscious role and greater political participation of the masses. The same economic growth and the expansion of the mass consumption market meant that the economic and social differences corresponded to a gradual homogenization of customs, lifestyles and cultural models.

Course program
The course explores the development of mass society from the late 19th to the 20th century, in relation to major political, economic, and cultural changes. Special focus will be given to the growing role of the masses in Italy’s public life during the 20th century and to leisure-related phenomena such as the media, sports, fashion, and tourism. Through the analysis of historical sources and case studies, students will gain tools to understand the dynamics of collective participation and the impact of mass society in the contemporary world.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of themes and events in Contemporary History recalled in the course.

Exam mode
The teaching will be taught with lectures integrated with seminars and group work aimed at deepening specific topics where texts will be discussed, films viewed and historical documents analyzed. The frequency of teaching is optional, but strongly recommended with program differences for non-attending students.
Lesson mode
During the semester, approximately halfway through the course, attending students will be required to develop and present a group project on key themes related to mass society. Subsequently, each member of the group will deliver an individual presentation based on a chosen text that is thematically consistent with the group topic. This individual assignment will account for 40% of the final grade. The examination will conclude with an oral assessment aimed at evaluating students’ knowledge and understanding of the remaining course content.
