Course objectives

The overall goal of the course is to contribute to the education of future journalism professionals capable of fostering production routines and creating informational content that promotes gender equality and women's empowerment, thereby helping to address and reduce gender imbalances. Specific objectives include: - providing knowledge on how images and narratives can either reinforce or challenge gender inequalities; - offering insight into the academic literature on the relationship between women and journalism; - examining the historical contribution of women to the journalistic profession; - equipping participants with the theoretical, conceptual, and analytical tools needed to independently evaluate journalistic representations related to gender, with particular attention to stereotypical and non-stereotypical portrayals of women and the LGBTQI+ community; - developing gender-sensitive communication skills, both verbal and visual/multimedia, specifically applied to media contexts including broadcast and digital platforms; - building knowledge and skills related to source research methods, database access, engagement with press offices, and use of digital tools that support gender equality initiatives; - offering knowledge and skills in fact-checking within the context of disinformation and post-truth; - developing the ability to produce gender-sensitive journalistic texts. More broadly, the course aims to prepare media professionals capable of designing gender-sensitive communication campaigns, producing journalism that accurately represents and narrates gender-related issues, and working in press offices and communication departments within organizations committed to gender equality policies.

Course program
The syllabus of the Gender Sensitive Journalism course for 2025-26 Academic Year will aim to capture the main transformations of the field of journalism from a gender-sensitive perspective. Particular attention will be paid to the transformations of the journalism profession and journalistic coverage from a gender perspective in the Italian and international context. The aim of the course is to provide theoretical knowledge and analytical skills in the field of gender and journalism studies. In particular, theoretical-conceptual knowledge will focus on the evolution of scientific reflection in the field of gender and journalism studies, with reference to the areas of media representations and production processes. Both legacy media and digital environments will be considered. Knowledge and understanding At the end of the course, students will be familiar with the theoretical-conceptual tools of gender and journalism studies, with reference to the fields of media representation and production processes. They will be familiar with the main theories that have addressed the relationship between gender and journalism, with reference to legacy media and digital environments. Applied knowledge and understanding Students will acquire the ability to understand the dynamics that characterise forms of journalism representation, production and fruition from a gender perspective. They will therefore be able to apply the theoretical-conceptual tools of gender and journalism studies to the analysis of media products and contexts, including digital ones. Autonomy of judgement Students will acquire the theoretical-conceptual and analytical-applicative tools necessary to autonomously judge forms of journalism representation related to the gender dimension. Communication skills Students will develop gender-sensitive communication skills, with reference to both verbal communication and audiovisual and multimedia communication. These skills will be directly related to media contexts (broadcast and digital). Learning skills Throughout the course, students will undertake a critical analysis of the literature relating to gender and journalism studies. With the help of these tools, students will acquire the necessary skills to independently deepen and update their own competences related to the relationship between gender and journalism.
