Laura Guazzone è professore associato abilitato ordinario di Storia dei paesi islamici (L-OR/10) presso la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, Dipartimento di studi orientali, della Sapienza Università di Roma. Si è laureata in Lingue Letterature Straniere Moderne (Arabo) presso l'università di Roma La Sapienza, ed ha conseguito la Maitrise presso il Pontificio Istituto Studi Arabo-Islamici di Roma e l'M. Phil. in Politics and International Relations presso la School of Oriental and African Studies di Londra. E' Consigliere scientifico del programma Mediterraneo - Medio Oriente dell'Istituto Affari Internazionali di Roma e membro del comitato scientifico-editoriale delle riviste The International Spectator, Maghreb-Machrek e RSO-Rivista di Studi orientali.
La sua attività di ricerca si concentra sulla storia contemporanea dei paesi arabi dell'Africa mediterranea e del Vicino e Medio Oriente, con particolare riferimento alla politica comparata e alla dimensione internazionale dei processi politici di questi paesi dal secondo dopoguerra ad oggi. In particolare lavora sui processi di trasformazione degli attori e dei sistemi politici arabi dagli anni '20 del Novecento; in quest'ambito ha analizzato il ruolo politico dei movimenti islamisti, la trasformazione del sistema regionale arabo e mediorientale, e l'evoluzione dei processi liberalizzazione politica. Per quanto riguarda le relazioni internazionali del Medio Oriente e Nord Africa, ha approfondito in particolare le questioni di sicurezza (politica estera, militare e di difesa) dei paesi dell'area, nonché; le relazioni politiche, economiche, culturali tra questi paesi e i principali paesi occidentali, con particolare attenzione all'Italia e agli altri paesi dell'Unione Europea. Ha inoltre sistematicamente documentato i principali avvenimenti internazionali nell'area Mediterraneo - Medio Oriente dalla metà degli anni Ottanta ad oggi. Su tutti questi temi ha concepito e diretto progetti di ricerca multinazionali, con il sostegno di istituzioni di ricerca italiane ed estere.

Curriculum (EN)

Laura Guazzone is Associate (enabled as full professor) Professor of History of the Islamic countries (SPS-13) at the Faculty of Humaties, Department Italian Institute of Oriental Studies, of the Sapienza University of Rome. She graduated in Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (Arabic) at the University of Rome La Sapienza, in Arab-Islamic Studies at the Pontifical Institute of Arabic-Islamic Studies in Rome and studied Politics and International Relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. She is Scientific Counselor of the Mediterranean-Middle East Program of the Institute of International Affairs -IAI in Rome and member of the scientific editorial board of The Internaitonal Spectator and Maghreb-Machrek.
She conducts research on the contemporary history of the Arab countries of North Africa and the Middle East, with particular reference to comparative politics and the international dimension of political processes since World War II. Her research in comparative politics has focused on the processes of transformation of the Arab political systems since 1970. In this area she has analyzed the political role of Islamist movements, the transformation of Arab and Middle Eastern regional system, and of the evolution of political liberalization and authoritarianism. As for the international relations of the Middle East and North Africa, her research has focused on security issues (foreign military and defense policies) of Euro-Mediterranean region, as well as on the political, economic and cultural relations between the major Western countries and the Arab World, with particular reference to Italy and the other EU countries. She also systematically analyzed the main international events of the Mediterranean - Middle East since the mid eighties to today. On all of the above subjects she has designed and directed international multidisciplinary research projects, with the support of Italian and foreign research foundations.
