VII: Grants:
Obtained funding as Principal Investigator for ~4.2 MEuros (~2.3 MEuros as PI) in the last 6 years
VIII: Research Activity:
Since 1989, my scientific activity has focused on the experimental investigation of the nature of fundamental interactions, mainly through participation in the design and execution of major international experiments: L3 at the LEP e⁺e⁻ collider (1989–2000), CDF at the Tevatron p–p ̄ collider (1999–2012), ATLAS at the LHC pp collider (2006–present), the DarkSide experiment at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratories (2014–2018), and studies for future colliders (FCC-ee and the IDEA detector concept).
In parallel and in synergy with this activity, since the mid-1990s I have been deeply involved both in the experimental application and in the development of modern Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Artificial Intelligence techniques, across various research and applied domains: high-energy and astroparticle physics, medical and health applications, eco-epidemiological modeling, quantum computing, and statistical physics.
In my research work, I have contributed personally and substantially to three of the most important achievements in fundamental physics of the past 20 years:
• the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC (2011–2012),
• the first observation of Bs meson mixing at the Tevatron (early 2000s),
• the precise determination of the number of light neutrino families at LEP (1990–1995).
I have also made significant contributions to the development and understanding of modern approaches to AI interpretability and explainability, and I have been among the pioneers in designing AI methods for ultra-fast inference in real-time applications.
Throughout my career, I have played a major role in both the advancement of particle physics and the integration of AI and data-driven methodologies in fundamental and applied research. I have also been at the forefront of developing physics-inspired AI algorithms for solving complex computational problems such as graph coloring and Boolean satisfiability (SAT).
I’m author of more than 2000 scientific papers published in peer reviewed international journals (2096 refereed papers, database Scopus, April 12th, 2025). I have been among the main authors and substantially contributed to the results and the writing of the paper for more than 200 of these publications, and for a similar number I have heavily contributed at the reported results with physics studies or by the development of analysis, and/or theoretical, and/or computational tools presented or extensively used in the result.
