AAF2009 TRAINING AND ORIENTATION INTERNSHIPS and AAF2008 OTHER USEFUL SKILLS FOR INCLUSION IN THE JOB MARKET
Beside the exams, before graduation you need to earn credits from other activities which are consistent with the objectives of the Global Humanities programme and which will be registered in your transcript of records as AAF2009 TRAINING AND ORIENTATION INTERNSHIPS and AAF2008 OTHER USEFUL SKILLS FOR INCLUSION IN THE JOB MARKET; they amount to 15 credits altogether and, since 1 credit is worth 25 hours, to obtain them you need to work 375 hours. To learn more about how to get an internship position, please visit the "Apprenticeship" section below.
While the credits can only be registered, upon booking through Infostud, in your third year, you may as well earn them earlier. In case you’re not able to get an offer for a real internship, either proposed by Sapienza or by you, you have two more possibilities to earn the required credits:
1) IT certificates
Certificates should refer to IT courses, in Italy or abroad, and should include the results of a final exam, detailing your grade and level.
All certificates must be in pdf format, named exclusively with your surname and first name and uploaded here. Once submitted, a certificate cannot be employed again to obtain other credits.
2) Conferences, seminars, webinars, courses and other activities relevant to GH studies
Both Sapienza and the Global Humanities programme occasionally organise activities which award credits and which will be announced here.
For conferences, seminars and webinars, you will have to ask the attendance certificate and write a report. Both documents must be in pdf format, named exclusively with your surname and first name and uploaded here.
Credits will be granted as follows:
- 1 credit = 6 hours (conference, seminar etc.) + essay (2000 words, spaces excluded)
- 2 credits= 12 hours (conference, seminar, etc.) + essay (2000 words, spaces excluded)
- 3 credits = 18 hours (conference, seminar, etc.) + essay (2000 words, spaces excluded)
- 4 credits = 24 hours (conference, seminar, etc.) + essay (2000 words, spaces excluded)
AAF2007 OTHER LANGUAGE SKILLS
Finally, you also need to obtain 6 credits from knowledge of a third language, which will be registered in your transcript of records as AAF2007 OTHER LANGUAGE SKILLS. While the credits can only be registered, upon booking through Infostud, in your third year, you may still gain the relevant knowledge earlier.
Language certificates are accepted only if they refer to languages other than your mother tongue and/or a second official language of your country of origin. In case you got a different citizenship before enrolling to Global Humanities, the language of your adoptive country is equated to your country of origin and therefore cannot be used to get the credits of Other Language Skills.
English is accepted only in case the last level certified is higher than the entry level submitted during the enrolment process (i.e. if your entry level was B1 you can present a certificate attesting a higher language level, like B2, C1 etc.; in no case the same certificate used to fulfill the admission requirements can be also used to get the credits of Other Language Skills). Any level is accepted, provided it specifies your CEFR level and has been awarded following a final exam.
All certificates must be in pdf format, named exclusively with your surname and first name and uploaded here. Once submitted, a certificate cannot be employed again to obtain other credits.

Tirocini
AAF2009 TRAINING AND ORIENTATION INTERNSHIPS and AAF2008 OTHER USEFUL SKILLS FOR INCLUSION IN THE JOB MARKET
The internship is a practical activity required for earning the degree, which awards credits and which you need necessarily to carry out before graduation; the relative credits will be registered in your transcript of records as AAF2009 TRAINING AND ORIENTATION INTERNSHIPS and AAF2008 OTHER USEFUL SKILLS FOR INCLUSION IN THE JOB MARKET; they amount to 15 credits altogether and, since 1 credit is worth 25 hours, to obtain them you need to work 375 hours.
While the credits can only be registered, upon booking through Infostud, in your third year, you may still carry out the internship earlier. For an internship to be activated, it is necessary to identify an organisation or an institution willing to host the training. You have two possibilities:
1) Internship at an organisation or an institution that already has an agreement with Sapienza
You may choose an organisation or an institution that already has an agreement with Sapienza applying through the TSP portal. Please, read carefully the FAQ and remember: once the Progetto Formativo has been approved, you must have it signed by the host institution, sign it in your turn and send it to tirocini.lettere@uniroma1.it. This procedure must be fulfilled before the starting date of the internship, in order to activate it, otherwise the insurance won’t be operating and the internship won’t be valid.
All internships available on the TSP portal are automatically accepted by the appointed Committee.
2) Internship proposed by the student
If you wish to carry out an internship in an organisation or an institution other than those with which Sapienza has an agreement, you must upload, in pdf format, the agreement, drawn up according to this model and signed - preferably digitally - by the legal representative of the organisation or institution or their delegate. The document must be exclusively in pdf format, and it must be named with the sole indication of your name and the name of the organisation or institution with which the agreement is to be drawn up. If the an organisation or institution does not have a digital signature, the agreement must be signed on a letterhaead with a handwritten signature. The pdf signed must be uploaded here.
In case you’re not able to get an offer for a real internship, either proposed by Sapienza or by you, you have other possibilities to earn the required credits. To learn more, please visit the "Other training activities that award credits" section above.
For further clarifications, please contact the appointed Committee at aaf.globalhumanities@uniroma1.it.
Laurearsi
To prepare and defend your thesis, the first step is to contact a supervisor well in advance. You need to choose a course and a professor: the course must be part of your learning path (study plan), but the professor can be any faculty member at Sapienza who teaches the relevant subject. If your project is interdisciplinary, a second supervisor may be involved.
The second step is to submit the graduation application through the Infostud platform (you are kindly requested to adhere to the deadlines and follow the official tutorial for the application process).
It’s important you reach out to the supervisor early enough to agree on the topic, write the thesis, and complete revisions. The timeframe will depend both on the professor’s availability and your commitment to completing the work. During the writing process, you will work closely with your supervisor, who will guide you through revisions.
Your thesis must be at least 30 pages, with each page consisting of 1,800 characters, including spaces. As for formatting, please follow the Sapienza instructions, while for referencing you may follow your supervisor’s preferred style, which could be APA, MLA, Harvard, or another system.
A useful reading to help you during the writing process is How to Write a Dissertation, by Umberto Eco.
Finally, the thesis defense typically lasts about 15 minutes. The supervisor will begin by introducing your work briefly, after which you will present your thesis in 5–7 minutes; if you choose, you can use a PowerPoint presentation. The Committee may ask questions or provide comments. Once the discussion is over, you will leave the room while the Committee deliberates and assigns a score to the thesis, ranging from 0 to 5 points; no extra points are awarded for graduating on time, participating in mobility programmes, or obtaining honours (lodi). The final grade will be calculated by adding the score for the thesis to your grade point average, which is based on a scale of 110.
After the Committee decision, you will be called back to hear the final decision and participate in the graduation proclamation.

Corsi minor
Minor Pathway (Percorso Minor) in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation for the Healthcare Area
What is a Minor Pathway?
The Minor Pathway is an interdisciplinary option that complements the degree programme you are enrolled in. It aims to broaden your educational horizons by adding valuable skills that are useful for further studies and for entering the job market.
To obtain the Minor qualification, you must acquire 30 CFU/ECTS in cross-disciplinary educational activities, some of which can be extracurricular, relative to your degree program. You must also complete a thesis project that includes references to the educational objectives of the Minor.
Enrolment in the Minor program is free, and the required credits for the extracurricular part can be completed up to six months after obtaining your degree. The attainment of the Minor is certified by the University, with the issuance of an Open Badge. If the Minor is obtained concurrently with the main degree, it is also recorded on the Diploma Supplement, an additional document to the degree certificate.
Educational Objectives of the Minor Pathway in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation for the Healthcare Area
Migration flows have become a constantly growing global phenomenon. By 2050, it is estimated that migrants across the globe could exceed 400 million people due to increasing demographic disparities, national, ethnic, and religious conflicts, environmental changes, new economic dynamics, and global policies. Given this situation, the health implications of migration are and will be ever more significant.
Despite migration flows involving a wide range of people with different levels of wellbeing, health needs, and vulnerabilities, there is one constant: the fact that migrants’ socio-economic backgrounds, which impact on their lifestyles and access to healthcare services, are one of the main determinants of health. One of the challenges of public health is therefore to ensure access to services and protection pathways for all those who find themselves in conditions of social fragility for whatever reason.
To ensure access to healthcare services, there is a growing need for mediators with cross-disciplinary linguistic skills in public facilities. These professionals help providers and users overcome linguistic and cultural barriers that hinder the provision and use of services, especially for vulnerable migrants. This group includes refugees and asylum seekers, long-term foreign residents in irregular conditions, and the poor and the homeless, a group often subjected to situations of social isolation, which leads to further difficulties in accessing healthcare services.
Such difficulties result in late diagnoses, which create a significant burden on public spending. This burden could be reduced by facilitating access to services and providing health education to migrants through the work of specialized mediators.
How to Access the Minor Pathway
In October 2024, a Call for Applications for the Minor Pathway in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation for the Healthcare Area will be published. This pathway is aimed at students enrolled in their second or third year of the 2024-2025 academic year in the following degree programmes: Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation (MLI); Global Humanities (GH); International Cooperation and Development (CIS); and Languages and Oriental Civilizations (LCO).
The Minor Pathway has a limited number of places. For the 2024-2025 academic year, there are 15 places available for MLI, 10 for GH, 10 for LCO, and 10 for CIS. You can apply by filling out the form included in the Call for Applications by the specified deadline.
When submitting your application, you will be required to attach a motivation letter, your latest approved Study Plan, and certification of the exams you have taken. Selection will be based on the choice of exams to be taken, the average grades achieved in the first year of your undergraduate degree programme, and your motivation letter.
How the Minor Pathway is Organised
The Minor Pathway in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation for the Healthcare Area is divided into three modules through which you can acquire the minimum of 24 CFU required, in addition to the 6 CFU for the compulsory Internship. For each module, you must choose exams from your Study Plan.
