VII – RESEARCH ACTIVITY
My research activity has focused on steroid hormones – specifically androgens and glucorticoids- and their interactions with cardiovascular disorders.
I dedicated my early carrier exploring the interactions between adipokines, steroid hormones and gonadal steroidogenesis. Through basic and clinical experimental studies I discovered and characterized the molecular mechanism linking leptin to the 17-20-lyase activity of Leydig cells. Subsequently, I moved to investigate the effects of steroid hormonal therapies in male hypogonadism and female hyperandrogenism, and how these could impact on cardiovascular health. In this field my research team has pioneered the studies on androgens – type 5 phosphodiesterase interactions in vascular pathophysiology.
While in UK, I dedicated my research activity to glucocorticoid excess. In particular I investigated diagnostic tests, including imaging and pathophysiology of Cushing’s syndrome, with some original works, for example on ectopic Cushing’s syndrome, being among the most highly cited in the field.
Back to Rome, I brought my knowledge in diagnostic medicine and imaging learnt in UK and set up a diagnostic facility that is now producing exciding finding on steroid hormones’ neoplasm, including Leydig-cell tumors and testicular cancer. In Rome, I have continued clinical translational research in the field of glucocorticoids focusing on adrenal insufficiency and the interplay between glucocorticoids, the immune system and the clock-genes. I have also produced clinical works on various aspects of pituitary disorders and neuroendocrine tumors.
Through my research I believe I have merged different expertise in andrology, sexual medicine and endocrinology starting a research area dedicated to the role of PDE5i in cardiovascular function, tissue repair and cardiac remodeling and regeneration, that is currently ongoing with simultaneous basic and clinical translational approach.
