Course program
Introduction to laboratory medicine. Definition of a biological sample. Screening test, meaning and
examples. The medical report and the reference values. Complete blood count. Haematocrit, VES.
Immunoematology; blood transfusion, donation of blood in apheresis. Blood derivatives. Blood
groups (AB0 and Rh). Blood typing and Coombs test. The transfusion reaction and its pathological
significance. Analysis of plasma proteins: the protidogram, its relevance in clinical diagnosis,
examples of medical reports. The main plasma proteins. Urine test: chemical, physical,
microscopic; meaning in clinical diagnosis. Laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases: direct and
indirect diagnosis. Examples: HIV tests and hepatitis B tests and COVID-19. ELISA test.
Laboratory investigations for allergic diseases (RIST, RAST, Prick and patch tests), examples of
medical reports.
