Teaching mode
The teacher delivers seminars with remote modality with audiovisual aids and scheduling of lessons
Frequency
The student is required to attend educational activities. The frequency is checked by the teachers through updated lists provided by the Academic Office
Exam mode
For the examination of the exam, we suggest a theoretical deepening already from the beginning of the course attendance

Lesson mode
The course consists in classroom lectures with audiovisual aids and scheduling o the lessons. The different topics covered during the course can be found on the recommended textbooks and on the auxiliary teaching material which will be eventually made available to students on the e-learning website
The teacher remains available for clarifications and explanations during reception hours

Course program
General parasitology and cycles of the main parasites
- Biological associations and parasitism
- Notes on morphological, structural and metabolic characteristics of protozoa, helminths and arthropods
- Parasite specificity
- Temporary and permanent ectoparasites
- Geographical distribution, life cycles and pathogenicity of the main parasites
- Main parasites found in biological samples, with particular reference to opportunists of nosocomial interest
- Modes of infection and transmission, also in relation to the infectivity of biological samples
Biological sample collection
- General rules of behaviour on the ward: risks and measures to be taken, quality control, prophylaxis
- Preparation of the patient for sample collection
- Suitability of the sample
- General knowledge on sampling methods for storing, transporting and observing parasites: faeces, urine, blood, duodenal aspirate, vaginal secretion, cerebrospinal fluid, corneal scrapings, skin scarification, sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, aspirate (from cysts, abscesses, glands, ulcers), biopsy (skin, muscle, duodenal, organ), perianal swab
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of biology and physiology of unicellular and multicellular organisms. Basic knowledge of cell and applied biology, microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, general and clinical pathology.

Ongoing assessment based on in-class questions to evaluate the acquisition of an ability to synthesise the topics explained: 20% of the final mark.
Final in-class assessment of knowledge of the topics covered during the course, taking into account the ability to link them in a logical and coherent manner: 80% of the final mark.
