Program of General Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Pathological Anatomy for the integrated course of Pathophysiological Bases of Diseases Prof. Rossella Paolini and Prof. Roberta Gonnella GENERAL CONCEPTS OF AETIOLOGY. Concept of health and disease. Chemical, physical and biological causes of disease. MECHANISMS OF RESPONSE TO THE CELL DAMAGE. Cellular adaptations (concepts of hyperplasia, hypertrophy, atrophy, metaplasia and neoplasia). Damage and cell death: hydropic and fatty degeneration; coagulative and colliquative necrosis; apoptosis. Molecular markers of tissue damage. PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY AND IMMUNOPATHOLOGHY. Cellular and molecular components of innate and acquired immunity. Immunological memory and vaccination strategy. Hypersensitivity reactions. Examples of autoimmune diseases. Laboratory tests for the evaluation of the components of the immune system: analysis of lymphocyte subpopulations; dosage of the components of humoral immunity (antibodies, complement, cytokines). INFLAMMATION. Acute and chronic inflammation. The cells of the inflammatory response. The chemical mediators of inflammation. Systemic manifestations of inflammation: fever. Monitoring of inflammatory processes: leucocytosis, acute phase proteins and ESR. Repair processes and wound healing. Topic covered: GENERAL CONCEPTS OF AETIOLOGY.
Prerequisites
Although no prerequisites are required, the student must have basic knowledge on cell biology, biochemistry, anatomy and hist
Books
Material provided by the teacher (slides shown during lectures). The texts recommended for the preparation of specific topics are: G.M. Pontieri "Elements of General Pathology", Forth Edition, Piccin, 2018; M. Parola "General Pathology and element of Pathophysiology", EdiSES, 2020.
