Principles of epidemiology and risks factors for cancer. Cancer classification and staging. Molecular mechanisms of cancer.
Immune response against tumor: relationship between inflammation and cancer.
Principles of anti-cancer therapy (chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immune therapy).
General features, epidemiology, etiology and therapy of the most common cancers, expecially those of particular interest to a physiotherapist such as:
breast cancer,
lung cancer,
bone tumors,
nervous system tumors,
leukemias and limphomas,
colorectal cancer
Topics covered:
Principles of epidemiology and risks factors for cancer. Cancer classification and staging.
Molecular mechanisms of cancer: oncogenes and tumor suppressors.
Neoplastic invasiveness and metastasis.
Immune response against tumor: relationship between inflammation and cancer.
Principles of anti-cancer therapy (chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immune therapy).
Prerequisites
Although no requirements are expected, the student must have basic skills on cellular and molecular biology and on pathophysiology.
Students are allowed to take the exam if they have already passed all required first- and second- year courses.
Books
Teaching and didactic materials.
The text of G.M. Pontieri: "Elements of General Pathology", already adopted by the students for the integrated course "Physiopathological bases of diseases", is suggested as a support to learning since it also addresses several aspects of molecular oncology treated in class.
Teaching mode
Lectures
Frequency
Mandatory attendance.
Exam mode
