Classification of the microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi). Structural and functional characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Bacteria: general organization, morphology and physiology. The bacterial spore. Bacterial pathogenesis: virulence factors and toxins. Fungi: morphology and reproduction. Viruses: structure and composition of viral particle. Replication, assembly and release. Exogenous and endogenous diseases, source and modes of transmission of infection. Microrganism control: disinfection and sterilization. Vaccines for the prevention of human microbial diseases. Antimicrobial agents. Antibiotics and antimicrobial assays. Infectious agents and clinical pictures.
