Course program
Introduction to the course: what the Pathological Anatomy is, where it comes from and where it goes. General organization, tasks and aims of a Pathologic Anatomy laboratory. Type of specimens sent to a Pathological Anatomy laboratory, methods and how the different specimens are sent. Management of the specimens and methods to prepare histological slides: acceptance, conformity, sampling, fixation, processing, embedding, cutting and staining. The intra-operative histological examination. Techniques to deepen the traditional histologic examination. The pathologic-anatomy autopsy; general principles and techniques. Gross and microscopic features of human pathologies, with particular reference to neoplasms and cardiovascular diseases.
Prerequisites
In order to understand properly the teaching content and to achieve the learning objectives, at the beginning of the teaching activities the student must possess adequate knowledge of normal Anatomy and Histology, Biology, Genetics, Physiology and General Pathology. Teaching mode
The teaching is based essentially on frontal lessons characterized by a strong interactive component between the teacher and the students. Other teaching specific methods may include group or individual works focused on the analysis of methods published in scientific journals and the observation of either autopsies or histological slides or both.
Frequency
Iin order to take the exam, it is mandatory that the presence in the classroom for the 75% of the hours corresponding to the credits assigned to the teaching has been documented. Attendance is verified by the teacher through signature / appeal sheets on updated lists provided by the Academic Office of the course. The certificate of mandatory attendance to the teaching course is required to the student to be admitted at the final test.
Exam mode
The assessment consists of an oral exam with questions related to the course program and takes into account: a) knowledge of the topics covered by the questions; b) adequacy of the answer to each of the questions in relation to the skills that are assumed to have been acquired at the end of the course; c) logic followed to answer the questions; d) use of an appropriate language.
Bibliography
Scientific articles related to topics included in the program will be recommended as a study tool for integrative purposes to frontal lessons and adopted texts.
